# Altcoin Season Index: Are Altcoins Beating Bitcoin? > The altcoin season index: how many of the top 100 coins beat bitcoin over 90 days, the coin-by-coin returns behind it and the bitcoin season reading. The altcoin season index asks a simple question: over the last 90 days, how many of the largest coins did better than bitcoin? It takes the top 100 coins by market cap, leaves out stablecoins and wrapped or staked copies of other assets, then counts those whose price return beat bitcoin's over the window. When at least three quarters of them beat bitcoin, the market is conventionally said to be in altcoin season; when a quarter or fewer do, it is bitcoin season. This dashboard shows the count, the reading on the usual 0 to 100 scale and every coin's return beside bitcoin's, so the list behind the number is always visible. The index describes the last 90 days; it says nothing about the next. Prices for most altcoins come from off-chain references, labelled per coin, with on-chain DEX prices shown as a cross-check wherever a coin trades on-chain. ## Blueprint ### Now The latest reading and the coins behind it. - **Altcoin season index** (score): Share of the universe whose return beat bitcoin's over the window, on a 0 to 100 scale. - **Coins beating bitcoin** (count): How many coins in the universe had a higher return than bitcoin over the window. - **Bitcoin's return** (%): Bitcoin's price return over the same window, the mark every coin is measured against. - **Median altcoin return** (%): The median return of the coins in the universe over the window. - **Every coin against bitcoin** (%): Each coin's return over the window minus bitcoin's, sorted, so the coins above and below the line are visible. - **Coins in the index**: Each coin's rank, return, return against bitcoin, price source and whether it counts as beating bitcoin. ### History How the reading moved over time. - **Days in altcoin season** (days): Days in the last year on which the index stood at three quarters or more. - **Days in bitcoin season** (days): Days in the last year on which the index stood at a quarter or less. - **Days by season** (days): Days in the last year split into altcoin season, bitcoin season and neither. - **Index over time** (score): The index by day, with the altcoin season and bitcoin season bands marked. Filters: Return window (Last 90 days by default, or 30 or 60 days); Universe (Top 100 or top 50 coins by market cap). ## How it will be measured - The universe is the top 100 coins by market cap on each day, excluding stablecoins and tokens that wrap, stake or bridge another asset, as recorded in the market cap registry. - Each coin's 90-day return is today's closing price over the close 90 days earlier; a coin counts as beating bitcoin when that return exceeds bitcoin's over the same days. - The index is the share of the universe that beat bitcoin, on a 0 to 100 scale; coins with less than 90 days of history are left out and listed. - Bitcoin's close is cross-checked against the Chainlink BTC/USD feed, and EVM-native tokens against time-weighted Uniswap v3 pool prices from the same day's blocks. ## Data it needs - `market_caps_daily` (to build): Market capitalization of major assets as circulating supply times a reference price, and each asset's share of the total, per day. - `native_prices_daily` (to build): Reference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time. - `dex_swaps_daily` (to build): Swap counts and volume per DEX, pool and chain per day, decoded from Swap events, valued with stablecoin legs and oracle prices. - Source: Daily closing USD prices for the top 100 coins, excluding stablecoins and wrapped tokens (off-chain price feed) - Source: Top 100 membership by market cap at each date, from the market cap registry - Source: Chainlink BTC/USD aggregator as a cross-check on the BTC close - Source: Uniswap v3 time-weighted prices from pool observations for EVM-native tokens, as an on-chain cross-check ## Questions ### What is altcoin season? Altcoin season is a period in which most large altcoins outperform bitcoin. By the usual definition, it is altcoin season when at least three quarters of the top coins, stablecoins excluded, beat bitcoin's return over the last 90 days. ### How is the altcoin season index calculated? Take the top 100 coins by market cap, remove stablecoins and wrapped or staked tokens, then compare each coin's 90-day price return with bitcoin's. The index is the share of coins that did better, from 0 to 100. ### What is bitcoin season? Bitcoin season is the opposite reading: a quarter or fewer of the top coins beat bitcoin over the last 90 days. It usually comes when bitcoin rises faster than the rest of the market or falls less. ### Is the altcoin season index a trading signal? No. It summarizes what already happened over the last 90 days. A high reading says many altcoins did well recently; it does not say they will keep doing so. ### Why are stablecoins and wrapped tokens excluded? A stablecoin tracks the dollar and a wrapped or staked token tracks the asset it wraps, so including them would count the same performance twice or add coins that cannot outperform by design. ## Glossary - **Altcoin**: Any cryptocurrency other than bitcoin.
