**Question:** How busy is the Avalanche C-Chain, and how much AVAX do its fees burn?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Layer 1 chains](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/chains)
- Chains: Avalanche
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

The C-Chain is the part of Avalanche that runs Ethereum-style contracts, and most of Avalanche's tokens, DeFi and stablecoins live there. This dashboard reads every accepted C-Chain block to show how much the chain is used each day, how fast its blocks come, what users pay for gas and how much AVAX those fees burn, next to the AVAX that validators stake on the P-Chain.

Avalanche's fee rules change how the figures read. Every C-Chain fee is burned, the priority fee included, so fees paid and AVAX burned are the same amount. Since 2025 validators also tune the gas target, and since the Granite upgrade they set the shortest time allowed between blocks too. Each figure is pinned to the block it was read at, with a receipt for the reads behind it.

## Blueprint

### Activity

Transactions, active addresses, block times and how much of the gas target blocks use.

- **Transactions, latest day** (count): EVM transactions in C-Chain blocks on the latest complete UTC day, successful and failed.
- **Active addresses, latest day** (count): Distinct senders of successful C-Chain transactions on the latest complete day.
- **Median block time** (seconds): The median interval between consecutive C-Chain blocks on the latest complete day, from their millisecond timestamps.
- **Gas used against target** (%): Gas per second used on the latest complete day as a share of the ACP-176 gas target validators set: above it, the base fee rises.
- **Transactions and active addresses by day** (count): Daily transactions and distinct senders over the selected period, so growth in users can be told apart from more activity per address.

### Fees and staking

The base fee, the AVAX burned in fees and the AVAX staked with validators.

- **Base fee now** (nAVAX): The base fee per gas of the latest accepted C-Chain block, read from its header, in nAVAX.
- **AVAX burned, latest day** (AVAX): All fees paid on the C-Chain on the latest complete day, base fee and priority fee together, every one of them burned.
- **AVAX staked** (AVAX): AVAX staked by Primary Network validators and their delegators at the day's last P-Chain block.
- **Primary Network validators** (count): Validators in the Primary Network's current set at the day's last P-Chain block, each validating the C-Chain, P-Chain and X-Chain.
- **AVAX burned by day** (AVAX): AVAX burned in C-Chain fees each day over the selected period, split into the base fee and priority fee parts.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, 90 days or a year).

## How it will be measured

- Transactions and active addresses are counted from every accepted C-Chain block per UTC day: EVM transactions and their distinct senders, with atomic imports and exports from the X-Chain and P-Chain counted apart.
- AVAX burned is every fee the C-Chain charged: gas used times the effective gas price of each transaction, base fee and priority fee together, since neither is paid to validators.
- Block time is the median interval between consecutive blocks, from the millisecond timestamps blocks carry since the Granite upgrade and from second timestamps before it.
- Gas used against target compares the day's gas per second with the target read from the ACP-176 fee state in each block header, which validators adjust.
- AVAX staked and the validator count come from platform.getCurrentValidators on the P-Chain at the day's last block, counting own stake plus delegations. Every figure carries a receipt with the block number and hash.

## Data it needs

- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- `gas_blocks` (to build): Base fee, priority fee percentiles, gas used and gas limit for each block on fee-market chains, for a near-live gas tracker.
- `staking_networks_daily` (to build): Staked supply, staking ratio, validators and nominal rewards per proof-of-stake network per day.
- Source: C-Chain block headers: gas_used, base_fee_per_gas, timestamp, the millisecond timestamp added by Granite and the ACP-176 fee state
- Source: C-Chain transactions and receipts: sender, status, gas used and effective gas price
- Source: Atomic import and export transactions in C-Chain blocks, kept apart from EVM transactions
- Source: platform.getCurrentValidators on the P-Chain at day-end blocks: each Primary Network validator's stake and delegations

## Questions

### What is the Avalanche C-Chain?

The contract chain of Avalanche's Primary Network. It runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so Ethereum wallets, tokens and contracts work on it, and it holds most of Avalanche's DeFi and stablecoins. The P-Chain manages validators, staking and L1s, and the X-Chain handles simple AVAX transfers.

### Are Avalanche gas fees burned?

Yes, all of them. On the C-Chain both the base fee and the priority fee are burned, unlike Ethereum, where the priority fee goes to the block proposer. Validators are paid from staking rewards issued on the P-Chain instead, so the AVAX burned tile equals the fees users paid.

### Why did C-Chain fees fall?

Upgrades lowered them in steps. Avalanche9000 cut the minimum base fee in December 2024, and the Octane change (ACP-176) in 2025 let validators set the gas target and lowered the floor again, so the base fee drops further whenever blocks run below target. The daily burn chart shows how fees paid moved after each change.

### How fast are Avalanche C-Chain blocks?

Since the Granite upgrade in November 2025, validators vote on a minimum delay between blocks and blocks carry millisecond timestamps. The dashboard measures the median interval each day from those timestamps rather than quoting a design figure. A block is final once accepted, without later reorganization.

### Who secures the C-Chain?

Primary Network validators, who stake AVAX on the P-Chain and validate its three chains; AVAX holders can delegate to them. Stake is locked for a period the staker chooses and is not slashed, but a validator must stay online enough of the time for it and its delegators to earn rewards.

## Glossary

- **C-Chain**: Avalanche's contract chain, which runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine and holds most of the network's tokens and applications.
- **P-Chain**: Avalanche's platform chain, which records validators, staking, delegations and the L1s registered on the network.
- **nAVAX**: One billionth of an AVAX. C-Chain gas prices are quoted in nAVAX per unit of gas, the counterpart of gwei on Ethereum.
- **ACP**: An Avalanche Community Proposal, the process that specifies upgrades such as ACP-176 for fees and ACP-226 for block times.
