**Question:** How many Bitcoin addresses hold at least 1 BTC?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Bitcoin](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/bitcoin)
- Chains: Bitcoin
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

The number of Bitcoin addresses holding at least 1 BTC is counted here from the UTXO set at each day's last block, beside every other balance band, from dust to the largest balances in steps of powers of ten, with the supply each band holds.

Address counts are not people counts. Exchanges hold the coins of many customers in a few addresses, which shrinks the small bands and swells the large ones, while one person can hold many small addresses. The dashboard shows the supply in labelled exchange addresses apart within each band, so a reader can see how much of a band they make up.

Use it to follow how bitcoin spreads across balances over time, or to check a claim about wholecoiners or whale addresses against the chain itself rather than against a quoted number.

## Blueprint

### Bands

Addresses and supply per balance band on the latest day.

- **Addresses with 1 BTC or more** (addresses): Addresses with a balance of at least one bitcoin at the latest day's last block.
- **Addresses with a balance** (addresses): Addresses with any positive balance at the same block.
- **Supply in 1 BTC+ addresses** (%): The share of circulating supply held by addresses with at least one bitcoin.
- **Supply in exchange addresses** (%): The share of circulating supply held in labelled exchange addresses, across all bands.
- **Addresses per band** (addresses): The address count in each balance band, from below a hundredth of a bitcoin to the largest balances.
- **Supply per band** (BTC): The supply held in each balance band, with the part in labelled exchange addresses marked.
- **Every band**: Each band with its address count, supply, share of supply, supply in labelled exchange addresses and the 30-day change in addresses.

### Trends

How each band's address count and supply changed over time.

- **1 BTC+ addresses, 30-day change** (addresses): The change in addresses holding at least one bitcoin over the last 30 days.
- **New addresses per day** (addresses): Addresses that received bitcoin for the first time, averaged per day over the last 30 days.
- **Share of supply by band** (%): Each band's share of circulating supply by day over the selected period.

Filters: Period (Last 90 days, last year or last four years).

## How it will be measured

- Each address's balance is the sum of its unspent outputs at the day's last block; addresses are then counted, and their supply summed, in balance bands that step by powers of ten.
- Bands run from below a hundredth of a bitcoin to the largest balances, and each address falls in exactly one band, so the bands' supplies add up to circulating supply.
- Supply in labelled exchange addresses is shown within each band from the address label registry, with each label's source.
- Non-zero addresses count every output script with a positive balance, and every figure is pinned to its day-end block with its hash.

## Data it needs

- `bitcoin_supply_daily` (to build): Bitcoin issued, supply by coin age band and by output script type (including coins whose public keys are already exposed), supply last moved long ago, and cost-basis measures.
- `address_labels` (to build): Labels for known addresses: exchanges, bridges, protocols, funds, treasuries, sanctioned addresses and known attackers.
- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- Source: The UTXO set at each day's last block, aggregated by output script
- Source: Address counts and supply per balance band, the bands stepping by powers of ten
- Source: The address label registry for exchange addresses, each label with its source

## Questions

### How many Bitcoin addresses hold at least 1 BTC?

The dashboard's first figure counts them at the latest day's last block, by summing unspent outputs per address. It is a count of addresses, not of people: exchanges hold many customers' coins in a few addresses, and one person may use many.

### What is a bitcoin wholecoiner?

Someone who holds at least one whole bitcoin. The chain cannot count wholecoiners directly, since one person may spread a coin over several addresses and one address may hold coins for many people, so the dashboard counts addresses holding one bitcoin or more instead.

### How is bitcoin distributed across addresses?

Unevenly: a small number of large addresses hold a large share of supply, but many of them are exchanges and custodians holding coins for others. The bands show both the address counts and the supply in each, with the part held in labelled exchange addresses.

### Why does the number of Bitcoin addresses with a balance change?

New addresses receive coins and old ones are emptied, while wallets consolidate many small outputs into one or split one into many. Exchange wallet changes can move large counts at once, so a jump in a band is worth checking against labelled addresses.

### What counts as dust in Bitcoin?

Outputs too small to be worth spending at normal fee rates, because the fee to spend them would exceed their value. The dashboard's smallest band holds them, and its supply shows how little value they carry.

## Glossary

- **Balance band**: A range of address balances, such as from one to ten bitcoin. Each address falls in exactly one band.
- **Dust**: An output worth less than the fee needed to spend it at typical fee rates.
- **Wholecoiner**: Someone who holds at least one whole bitcoin. On-chain, the closest measure is addresses with a balance of one bitcoin or more.
