**Question:** How many Bitcoin transactions and active addresses are there each day?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Bitcoin](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/bitcoin)
- Chains: Bitcoin
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Bitcoin's daily transactions and active addresses are counted here from every block of each UTC day, together with how much of the block weight limit those blocks used. They are the most direct measure of how much the chain itself is used, as opposed to how much bitcoin trades elsewhere.

Raw counts mix very different activity. A single payment, an exchange batch paying many customers and an inscription each count as one transaction, and one wallet may use a new address for every payment. The dashboard therefore shows inputs and outputs beside transactions and separates inscription and runes transactions from the rest. It counts active addresses as distinct senders and receivers.

## Blueprint

### Activity

Transactions, active addresses and block space used by day.

- **Transactions, last day** (count): Non-coinbase transactions in the blocks of the last complete UTC day.
- **Active addresses, last day** (addresses): Distinct addresses that sent or received bitcoin in the same day.
- **Block space used** (%): The day's total block weight as a share of the weight limit of the blocks mined that day.
- **Inscription and runes share** (%): The share of the day's transactions that carried an inscription or a runestone.
- **Transactions by day** (count): Transactions per day over the selected period, split into inscription, runes and all other transactions.
- **Active addresses by day** (addresses): Active addresses per day over the selected period, with senders and receivers drawn apart.
- **Inputs and outputs by day** (count): Inputs spent and outputs created per day, which show the batching and consolidation that transaction counts hide.
- **Block space used by day** (%): Block space used per day as a share of the weight limit over the selected period, with the witness part shown apart.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, last year or since 2015).

## How it will be measured

- Transactions, inputs, outputs and total weight are read for each block from getblockstats (txs, ins, outs and total_weight) and summed by UTC day, coinbase transactions excluded.
- Active addresses are distinct output scripts that spent an output or received one during the day; each counts once, and senders and receivers are also shown apart.
- Block space used is each day's total weight as a share of the combined weight limit of the blocks mined that day.
- Inscription and runes transactions are identified from witness envelopes and OP_RETURN runestones, so that all other transactions can be shown on their own.

## Data it needs

- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- `bitcoin_network_daily` (to build): Blocks, hashrate implied by difficulty, difficulty, fees, transaction counts, block weight and miner revenue (subsidy plus fees) per day.
- `bitcoin_inscriptions_daily` (to build): Inscriptions, rune etchings and mints, BRC-20 transfers, and the fees they paid per day.
- Source: getblockstats for every block: txs, ins, outs, total_size and total_weight
- Source: Distinct sending and receiving output scripts per UTC day, from block inputs and outputs
- Source: Witness envelopes and OP_RETURN runestones, to separate inscription and runes transactions

## Questions

### How many transactions does Bitcoin process per day?

The dashboard counts every non-coinbase transaction in the day's blocks, read from the blocks themselves. The number varies with demand for block space and with how much activity is batched, so it is shown with inputs, outputs and weight used.

### What is an active address on Bitcoin?

An address that sent or received bitcoin during the day, counted once however many transactions it made. Wallets often use a new address for each payment, so active addresses overstate the number of people using the chain.

### Why can transaction counts fall while fees rise?

Block space is fixed, so the count depends on transaction size as much as on demand. Larger transactions, such as those with many inputs or large witness data, fill blocks with fewer transactions. Fees rise when more is waiting than fits.

### Do Ordinals and Runes count as Bitcoin transactions?

Yes. They are ordinary Bitcoin transactions that carry extra data. The dashboard identifies them from their witness envelopes and runestones and shows them apart, so payment activity can be read without them.

### Is Bitcoin's transaction count a good measure of adoption?

Only partly. Exchanges, funds and layer 2 systems such as Lightning move value without a transaction for each payment, so on-chain counts miss them. The count measures use of block space, which is what this dashboard reports.

## Glossary

- **Weight unit**: The unit of block space since SegWit. A non-witness byte weighs four units and a witness byte one, and each block has a fixed weight limit.
- **Batching**: Paying many recipients in one transaction, which saves fees and lowers the transaction count for the same payments.
- **Active address**: An address that sent or received bitcoin within the day, counted once.
