**Question:** Which large Bitcoin transactions just happened, and how old were the coins they moved?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Bitcoin](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/bitcoin)
- Chains: Bitcoin
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

The largest Bitcoin transactions of the latest blocks are listed here as they confirm, each with the value that actually changed hands, the age of the coins it spent and, where a public source supports it, who sent or received them. Large transfers draw attention because they can be an exchange moving reserves, a fund settling or a long-dormant holder waking up.

A Bitcoin transaction has inputs and outputs rather than a sender and a receiver, and most return change to the sender. The dashboard estimates the transferred value by setting likely change outputs aside and names the rule it used, so a wallet shuffling coins between its own addresses is not counted as a whale transfer. Each row is pinned to its block, with the transaction id as the receipt.

## Blueprint

### Live

The largest transactions of the latest blocks and the last 24 hours.

- **Whale transactions, 24 hours** (count): Transactions in the last 24 hours whose transferred value passed the selected threshold.
- **Value moved, 24 hours** (BTC): The transferred value of those transactions added up, change set aside.
- **Largest transfer, 24 hours** (BTC): The single largest transferred value in the last 24 hours, linked to its transaction and block.
- **Moved to exchanges, 24 hours** (BTC): The part of the day's whale value that ended at labelled exchange addresses.
- **Latest whale transactions**: Each listed transaction with its block, time, transferred value, USD value, value-weighted coin age, the change rule used and labels for sender and receiver where known.

### Trends

How many whale transactions happen and how old their coins are, over time.

- **Average whale transactions per day** (count): The average number of transactions per day above the selected threshold over the selected period.
- **Share moving coins over a year old** (%): The share of whale value over the period that spent coins older than one year.
- **Whale transactions by day** (count): Transactions above the threshold per day over the selected period, split by whether they ended at a labelled exchange.
- **Age of the coins whales move** (BTC): Whale value per week split by the age of the coins spent, from under a month to over ten years.

Filters: Size threshold (At least 100 BTC moved, at least ten times that or the 10 largest of the day); Period (Last 30 days, last 90 days or last year).

## How it will be measured

- Every confirmed transaction is read with getblock verbosity 3, which gives each input's previous output with its value and the height it was created at.
- Transferred value is the output total minus outputs judged to be change: outputs back to an input's address, or the one output matching the inputs' script type when the others differ; each row names the rule used.
- Coin age is the value-weighted age of the inputs spent, from the blocks that created them to the block that spent them.
- Sender and receiver labels come only from the address label registry, each with its public source; unlabelled addresses stay unknown.
- A transaction is listed when its transferred value passes the selected threshold, and its USD value uses the oracle BTC/USD price at that day's last block.

## Data it needs

- `whale_transfers` (to build): Transfers above a size threshold per token and chain, with sender and receiver labels (exchange, fund, bridge, unknown).
- `address_labels` (to build): Labels for known addresses: exchanges, bridges, protocols, funds, treasuries, sanctioned addresses and known attackers.
- `exchange_balances_daily` (to build): Balances held in labelled exchange wallets per asset, chain and exchange at day end, and net flows in and out.
- `native_prices_daily` (to build): Reference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time.
- Source: getblock verbosity 3 for each new block: inputs with prevout value and height, and outputs
- Source: Change-output rules applied to each transaction, recorded with the rule used
- Source: The address label registry, each label with its public source
- Source: Chainlink BTC/USD on Ethereum at the day's last block, for USD values

## Questions

### What counts as a Bitcoin whale transaction?

Here, a transaction whose transferred value, after setting change aside, passes the threshold you choose. The threshold applies to value moved, not to the total of the outputs, so a wallet sending its own coins back to itself in one large output does not count.

### Does a large Bitcoin transaction mean someone is selling?

Not on its own. Large transfers include exchanges moving coins between hot and cold wallets, custodians settling for funds and owners consolidating outputs. A transfer that ends at a labelled exchange deposit address makes a sale more likely, but even that is not certain.

### How do you know how old the moved coins were?

Every input points to the output it spends, and that output was created in a known block. The time between that block and the spending block is the coins' age, and the dashboard weights each input by its value.

### Can you tell who owns a whale address?

Only when a public source says so: an exchange's published reserve addresses, a court filing or a fund's disclosed custody addresses. Everything else is shown as unknown. Clustering guesses are never used to name an owner.

## Glossary

- **Change output**: An output that returns the unspent part of the inputs to the sender, because a Bitcoin input must be spent in full.
- **Coin age**: The time since the spent outputs were created, weighted here by their value.
- **Exchange deposit address**: An address an exchange gives a customer to receive coins, which the exchange later sweeps into its own wallets.
