**Question:** How much is Celo used, and how many transactions pay gas in stablecoins?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Layer 1 chains](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/chains)
- Chains: Celo
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Celo has been an Ethereum layer 2 since it moved from a standalone layer 1 in March 2025, and it is built for payments in stablecoins: users can pay gas in a stablecoin instead of CELO, and wallets such as MiniPay are built around it. This dashboard reads every Celo block to show the chain's daily activity, how many transactions pay gas in each stablecoin and the stablecoins issued and moved on Celo.

Celo carries dollar stablecoins next to local-currency ones from the Mento protocol, so supply is shown by coin and peg and only coins with the same peg are added together. Fees paid in different currencies are converted with Celo's own oracle rates at the block. Every figure carries a receipt with the block it was read at.

## Blueprint

### Activity

Transactions, active addresses, first-time senders and gas paid in stablecoins.

- **Transactions, latest day** (count): Transactions in Celo blocks on the latest complete UTC day.
- **Active addresses, latest day** (count): Distinct senders of successful transactions on the latest complete day.
- **Gas paid in stablecoins** (%): Transactions that paid gas in a stablecoin instead of CELO, as a share of the latest day's transactions.
- **First-time senders, latest day** (count): Addresses that sent their first transaction on Celo on the latest complete day.
- **Transactions and active addresses by day** (count): Daily transactions and active addresses over the selected period, with the move to a layer 2 in March 2025 marked.

### Stablecoins and fees

Stablecoin supply and transfers by coin and peg, and fees by currency.

- **USD stablecoins on Celo** (USD): Supply of USD stablecoins issued on Celo, such as USDm, USDC and USDT, at the latest day-end block; other pegs are kept apart.
- **Fees paid, latest day** (USD): Fees paid on the latest complete day in every gas currency, converted to USD at Celo's oracle rates.
- **Gas currencies used** (count): Distinct currencies that transactions paid gas in on the latest complete day, CELO included.
- **USD stablecoin transfers** (USD): Value of USD stablecoin transfers on the latest complete day, leaving out mints and burns.
- **Stablecoins on Celo**: Each stablecoin on Celo with its peg, supply, transfers and holders on the latest day, never adding different pegs together.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, 90 days or a year).

## How it will be measured

- Activity is counted from every Celo block per UTC day, with the layer 1 era before the March 2025 migration and the layer 2 era after it shown as one series with the change marked.
- Fees are gas used times the effective gas price in the currency each transaction paid; CIP-64 transactions name their fee currency, and amounts are converted to USD with Celo's SortedOracles rates at the same block.
- Stablecoin supply is each token's totalSupply() at the day's last block, by coin and peg; USD stablecoins are summed, while other pegs are listed apart and never added to them.
- Every figure carries a receipt with the block number and hash and the reads behind it.

## Data it needs

- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- `stablecoin_supply_daily` (published): Native supply of each USD and EUR stablecoin on each covered chain at the chain's last block of each day, from totalSupply() reads, with bridged copies kept apart.
- `stablecoin_flows_daily` (to build): Stablecoin mints, burns, transfer volume and active addresses per stablecoin and chain per day.
- `native_prices_daily` (to build): Reference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time.
- Source: Celo blocks and transactions: sender, status, gas used and effective gas price, with the fee currency of each CIP-64 transaction
- Source: CIP-64 receipts, which carry the base fee in the fee currency paid
- Source: FeeCurrencyDirectory: the allowlisted gas currencies and their adapters
- Source: totalSupply() and Transfer logs of the Mento stablecoins, USDC and USDT on Celo at day-end blocks
- Source: SortedOracles median rates, for converting fee currencies to USD

## Questions

### Is Celo a layer 1 or a layer 2?

Celo began as a layer 1 and became an Ethereum layer 2 on March 26, 2025, built on the OP Stack and posting its data to EigenDA. Its blocks are now produced by a sequencer, and its elected validators run community RPC nodes instead of producing blocks.

### Can you pay Celo gas fees in stablecoins?

Yes. Celo's fee abstraction lets a transaction pay gas in an allowlisted token, such as USDm, USDC or USDT, instead of CELO, using a CIP-64 transaction that names the fee currency. The dashboard shows how many transactions pay this way and in which currencies.

### What happened to cUSD?

Mento, the protocol behind Celo's native stablecoins, renamed them from a c prefix to an m suffix, so cUSD became USDm and cEUR became EURm, without changing their contracts. The dashboard identifies each coin by its contract, so its series continues across the rename.

### What is MiniPay?

A stablecoin wallet from Opera that runs on Celo and is used for small payments, built into the Opera Mini browser and also available as an app. Its users pay fees in stablecoins, so its activity shows up in Celo's stablecoin and fee-currency figures, though the chain does not label which addresses use it.

### How are fees in different currencies compared?

Each fee is converted to USD with the rate Celo's own oracle contract reports at the same block, so a fee paid in USDm and one paid in CELO can be added. The gas currency tiles show how much was paid in each currency before conversion.

## Glossary

- **Fee abstraction**: Celo's feature that lets transactions pay gas in allowlisted tokens other than CELO, such as dollar stablecoins.
- **CIP-64**: The Celo transaction type that names the currency a transaction pays its fee in.
- **Mento**: The protocol that issues Celo's native stablecoins, from dollar and euro coins such as USDm and EURm to local-currency ones.
- **OP Stack**: The open-source software for building optimistic rollups on Ethereum, which Celo has run on since its migration.
- **EigenDA**: A data availability layer secured by restaked ETH, where Celo posts its transaction data instead of Ethereum blobs.
