**Question:** What is the crypto fear and greed index today, and how does it compare with past extremes?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Markets and trading](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/trading)
- Chains: Multi-chain, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Hyperliquid
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

The crypto fear and greed index is a published sentiment score on a scale from 0 to 100, where low readings mean extreme fear and high readings mean extreme greed. Its publisher combines measures such as volatility, momentum, trading volume and social activity into one number each day, and many traders check it to judge the market's mood.

This dashboard records the published reading each day with its source, and sets it beside readings taken from the chain on the same days: perpetual funding rates and open interest, long and short liquidations and the bitcoin and ether moving into and out of exchange wallets. Those on-chain readings come with receipts, so a reader can see what the market was doing when the index said fear or greed.

The index is a description of mood, not a forecast. Use it to place today's reading against past extremes, and use the on-chain readings to check whether leverage and flows agree with it.

## Blueprint

### Today

The latest reading beside the day's on-chain readings.

- **Fear and greed, today** (score): The published index value for the latest day on its 0 to 100 scale, with its label, such as fear or greed.
- **On-chain sentiment** (score): The on-chain composite for the same day, built from funding, liquidations, exchange flows and stablecoin issuance.
- **BTC funding, daily average** (%): Hyperliquid's BTC perpetual funding averaged over the latest UTC day, expressed as an annual rate.
- **BTC exchange netflow** (BTC): Bitcoin sent into labelled exchange wallets minus bitcoin sent out on the latest complete day.
- **Today's on-chain components** (score): Each component of the on-chain composite on the latest day, scaled to the same 0 to 100 range, beside the published index.

### History

The index and the on-chain readings over time, with past extremes.

- **Days in extreme fear** (days): Days in the selected period on which the published index stood in its extreme fear band.
- **Days in extreme greed** (days): Days in the selected period on which the published index stood in its extreme greed band.
- **Liquidations, longs and shorts** (USD): Daily long and short liquidations on on-chain venues over the selected period.
- **Index and on-chain composite** (score): The published index and the on-chain composite by day, with the extreme fear and extreme greed bands shaded.
- **Past extremes**: The days with the lowest and highest published readings, with that day's funding, liquidations and exchange netflow.

Filters: Period (Last 30 or 90 days, 1 year or all history).

## How it will be measured

- The published index value and its label are recorded once a day with the publisher's source and the time of the read; they are shown as published and never recomputed.
- Funding and open interest are Hyperliquid's BTC and ETH perpetual readings, averaged over each UTC day from its hourly funding.
- Liquidations are the day's long and short liquidations on on-chain venues, valued at oracle prices at each liquidation block.
- Exchange flows are the net BTC and ETH moving into or out of exchange wallets published for proof of reserves, with transfers between one exchange's own wallets removed.
- An on-chain sentiment composite built only from these inputs is shown beside the published index, with its formula versioned and every component visible.

## Data it needs

- `market_sentiment_daily` (to build): A sentiment index built only from published on-chain inputs (exchange flows, stablecoin issuance, perp funding, liquidations, long-held supply moving), with every component shown.
- `perps_markets_daily` (to build): Volume, open interest, funding rates and fees per market on on-chain perpetual exchanges, per day.
- `liquidations` (to build): Every liquidation on major lending markets and perp venues: collateral seized, debt repaid, liquidator, and the price at the time.
- `exchange_balances_daily` (to build): Balances held in labelled exchange wallets per asset, chain and exchange at day end, and net flows in and out.
- Source: Published daily crypto fear and greed index values and labels (off-chain feed, recorded with its source)
- Source: Hyperliquid core hourly funding rates and open interest for BTC and ETH perps
- Source: Daily long and short liquidation totals from Hyperliquid liquidation fills and lending liquidation events
- Source: Daily BTC and ETH exchange netflows from exchange-published proof-of-reserve addresses

## Questions

### What is the crypto fear and greed index?

It is a daily sentiment score from 0 to 100 that combines market measures such as volatility, momentum and trading activity. Low readings are labelled fear or extreme fear, and high readings greed or extreme greed.

### What does extreme fear mean in crypto?

Extreme fear is the lowest band of the index. It usually follows sharp price falls, high volatility and heavy selling. It describes the mood of recent days; it does not say what prices will do next.

### How is the fear and greed index calculated?

Its publisher combines several weighted inputs (typically volatility, momentum and volume, social activity and bitcoin dominance) and scales the result from 0 to 100. The weights belong to the publisher; this dashboard records the published value and shows on-chain readings beside it.

### Is there an on-chain fear and greed index?

This dashboard shows an on-chain composite built only from published chain data: funding rates, liquidations, exchange flows and stablecoin issuance. Every component is shown, so the composite can be checked and recomputed.

### How often does the fear and greed index update?

The published index updates once a day. The on-chain readings beside it are computed for each UTC day from blocks, and the latest day fills in as its blocks are indexed.

## Glossary

- **Funding rate**: A periodic payment between longs and shorts on perpetual futures that keeps the contract near the spot price. Positive funding means longs pay shorts.
- **Exchange netflow**: Coins sent into exchange wallets minus coins sent out over a period. Positive netflow means more coins arrived than left.
- **Sentiment index**: A single score that summarizes several market measures into a reading of mood, from fear to greed.
