About

What it answers, and for whom.

A liquidation happens when a leveraged position's collateral no longer covers the loss it could take, and the venue closes it by force. Long liquidations cluster when prices fall and short liquidations when they rise, so the split between them shows which side of the market was caught by the last move.

This dashboard adds up the last 24 hours of liquidations on on-chain venues, where every event is a transaction: perpetual exchanges such as Hyperliquid and GMX, and lending markets such as Aave, Compound and Morpho. Liquidations reported by centralized exchanges are shown beside them as their own series, labelled with their source and never mixed into the on-chain total.

Read it by venue to see where leverage was flushed, or by coin to see which market moved. Each on-chain liquidation opens to its transaction, the position closed and the oracle price at that block.

Method

How it will be measured.

Every figure will be read at a block, kept with its source and its exact read, and open a receipt anyone can re-check.

How receipts work →
  1. Perpetual liquidations come from Hyperliquid fills flagged as liquidations and from GMX v2 position decreases with the liquidation order type, each with its coin, side, size and price.
  2. Lending liquidations come from Aave v3 LiquidationCall, Compound v3 AbsorbCollateral and Morpho Blue Liquidate events on each covered chain, valued at the oracle price at the liquidation block.
  3. A lending liquidation counts as a long when volatile collateral backed a stablecoin debt, and as a short when stablecoin collateral backed a volatile debt; other pairs are shown as neither.
  4. Centralized-exchange liquidations come from the exchanges' public liquidation streams, which some venues sample rather than publish in full, so those totals are a lower bound and are labelled as reported.
  5. The 24-hour window is rolling and closes at the latest indexed block of each chain; every on-chain figure carries its block, its transaction and the oracle read behind its USD value.

Questions

Questions people ask.

What is a crypto liquidation?

A liquidation is the forced closing of a leveraged position whose margin or collateral has fallen below the venue's maintenance requirement. The venue, or a liquidator it pays, closes the position to stop the loss growing beyond the collateral that backs it.

What is the difference between long and short liquidations?

A long liquidation closes a position that bet on a rising price, so it follows a fall. A short liquidation closes a bet on a falling price, so it follows a rise. A large imbalance between the two shows which side was most crowded before the move.

Why do liquidation totals differ between sources?

Venues publish liquidations differently. On-chain venues record every one as a transaction, while some centralized exchanges publish only a sample of their liquidation orders. Totals also differ in their time window and in how positions are valued.

Do lending liquidations count as longs or shorts?

A lending position has no side, but it behaves like one. Borrowing stablecoins against ETH is a leveraged long on ETH, liquidated when ETH falls. This dashboard classifies each lending liquidation by its collateral and debt, and shows mixed pairs apart.

What causes a liquidation cascade?

When prices fall fast, liquidations sell collateral into the market, which pushes prices lower and triggers the next layer of liquidations. Cascades show up here as bursts of liquidations within a few blocks.

Maintenance margin
The least collateral a leveraged position must keep. Below it, the venue starts to liquidate the position.
Health factor
On lending markets such as Aave, the ratio of a borrower's risk-adjusted collateral to debt. Below one, the position can be liquidated.
Liquidator
The account that closes an unsafe position, repaying debt or taking over the position in return for a bonus or fee.
