**Question:** How much DOGE exists, and how secure and busy is the Dogecoin network?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Layer 1 chains](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/chains)
- Chains: Dogecoin
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Dogecoin is a proof-of-work chain with one-minute blocks, a fixed reward per block and no cap on supply, and most of its mining comes from Litecoin miners through merged mining. This dashboard reads every block to show the hashrate and difficulty securing it, how much of that work is merge-mined and how much DOGE exists and is issued each day, along with the transactions and fees the chain carries.

The supply figure is added up from the coinbase of every block since genesis, so it is exact at the block it was read at rather than an estimate. Inscriptions are counted apart from ordinary transfers, so a burst of them does not read as payment activity. Each figure carries a receipt with the block height and hash behind it.

## Blueprint

### Mining

Hashrate, difficulty, block times and the share of blocks merge-mined.

- **Hashrate** (TH/s): The hashrate implied by the latest complete day's difficulty and block intervals.
- **Difficulty**: The difficulty of the latest block, read from the bits field of its header.
- **Median block interval** (seconds): The median interval between blocks on the latest complete UTC day.
- **Merge-mined share** (%): Blocks on the latest complete day mined through AuxPoW, as a share of all the day's blocks.
- **Hashrate and difficulty by day** (TH/s): Implied hashrate and difficulty each day over the selected period, so a move in hashrate can be matched to the difficulty that followed.

### Supply and usage

DOGE in existence and issued, transactions and fees.

- **DOGE in existence** (DOGE): All DOGE issued since the genesis block, summed from every coinbase reward up to the latest block.
- **DOGE issued, latest day** (DOGE): New DOGE paid to miners on the latest complete day, block rewards without fees.
- **Transactions, latest day** (count): Transactions on the latest complete day, leaving out coinbase transactions.
- **Fees paid, latest day** (DOGE): Fees paid on the latest complete day: inputs minus outputs of every transaction.
- **Transactions by day** (count): Transactions each day over the selected period, with inscription transactions shown apart from ordinary transfers.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, 90 days or a year).

## How it will be measured

- Difficulty and block intervals are read from every block header; hashrate is implied from difficulty and the time the day's blocks took, the same estimate used for Bitcoin, so it is a measure of work, not a count of machines.
- A block counts as merge-mined when its header carries AuxPoW data, the proof that its work was done for a parent block on another Scrypt chain, usually Litecoin.
- Supply is the sum of every coinbase reward since the genesis block, net of fees, and daily issuance is the block rewards of the day's blocks.
- Transactions exclude coinbases; fees are inputs minus outputs per transaction; inscription transactions are identified by the envelope in their input scripts and shown apart, and every figure carries a receipt with the block height and hash.

## Data it needs

- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- Source: Dogecoin block headers: timestamp, bits for difficulty and the AuxPoW data that merge-mined blocks carry, with the parent block's hash
- Source: Coinbase transactions: block reward and fees per block, for supply and issuance
- Source: Transactions: inputs, outputs, size and fee, with inscription envelopes in input scripts marked

## Questions

### Does Dogecoin have a maximum supply?

No. Each Dogecoin block pays a fixed reward, so a similar amount of new DOGE is created every year with no cap. Because the yearly amount stays the same while supply grows, the rate of inflation falls slowly over time. The supply tile adds up every reward ever paid.

### What is merged mining?

Dogecoin accepts proof of work done for another Scrypt chain, so Litecoin miners can mine Dogecoin with the same work at no extra cost. Merged mining began in 2014 and is why Dogecoin's hashrate moves with Litecoin's. The dashboard shows the share of blocks mined this way.

### How fast are Dogecoin blocks?

Dogecoin targets one block a minute and adjusts difficulty at every block with the DigiShield algorithm, so block times return to target quickly after hashrate changes. The dashboard measures the median interval between blocks each day.

### How are Dogecoin fees set?

Dogecoin fees are paid per byte of transaction size, and node software sets the minimum fee it will relay and mine, so most transactions pay close to that minimum. Fees rise only when blocks fill, for example during bursts of inscription transactions.

### What are Doginals?

Inscriptions on Dogecoin: data such as images or text written into transaction input scripts, modelled on Bitcoin's Ordinals, with DRC-20 tokens built on top. They are counted apart from ordinary transfers so that bursts of inscriptions do not distort usage.

## Glossary

- **Merged mining**: Mining two chains with the same proof of work; Dogecoin accepts work done for Litecoin blocks.
- **AuxPoW**: Auxiliary proof of work: the data in a merge-mined Dogecoin block that proves its work through a parent chain's block.
- **Scrypt**: The memory-hard hashing algorithm that Dogecoin and Litecoin use for proof of work.
- **DigiShield**: The difficulty algorithm Dogecoin uses to retarget at every block, so block times recover quickly when hashrate moves.
- **Coinbase**: The first transaction in each block, which pays the miner the block reward and the block's fees.
