**Question:** How much long-dormant bitcoin moved this week, and how old was it?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Bitcoin](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/bitcoin)
- Chains: Bitcoin
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

This dashboard adds up the long-dormant bitcoin that moved this week, split by how old it was: coins unmoved for five, seven or ten years and more. Each large move is listed with its block, its transaction and the age of its coins, because an old wallet waking up is one of the most watched events on the chain.

Coins move for many reasons: an owner consolidating or upgrading wallets, a custodian rotating keys, a sale or a distribution by an estate or a bankruptcy trustee. The chain shows that old coins moved, not why. Revived supply and coin days destroyed measure how much dormancy ended, and a destination is labelled only where a public source supports the label.

## Blueprint

### This week

Dormant coins that moved in the last seven days and the largest moves.

- **Dormant coins moved, 7 days** (BTC): Bitcoin spent in the last seven days from outputs older than the selected age.
- **Of which ten years or older** (BTC): The part of that week's dormant spending that came from coins unmoved for ten years or more.
- **Dormant moves, 7 days** (count): Transactions in the last seven days that spent coins older than the selected age.
- **Coin days destroyed, 7 days** (coin days): Coin days destroyed over the last seven days by every spend: value times days unmoved, added up.
- **This week's dormant moves**: Each transaction of the week that spent long-dormant coins: block, time, value moved, value-weighted age, the year its oldest input was created and where the coins went, labelled where known.

### History

Revived supply and coin days destroyed over the years.

- **Supply still dormant** (BTC): Supply unmoved for longer than the selected age, at the latest day's last block.
- **Dormant coins moved, 365 days** (BTC): Bitcoin older than the selected age that moved in the last 365 days.
- **Revived supply by week** (BTC): Revived supply per week over the selected period, split into five, seven and ten-year age bands.
- **Coin days destroyed by day** (coin days): Coin days destroyed per day over the selected period, with a 30-day average drawn through it.

Filters: Dormant for at least (Five, seven or ten years); Period (Last year, last four years or since 2015).

## How it will be measured

- Each spent input's age is the time between the block that created its previous output and the block that spent it, read with getblock verbosity 3.
- Revived supply is the value of inputs older than each age threshold, summed by day and by week; coin days destroyed is each input's value times its age in days, summed over all spends.
- A large dormant move is a transaction spending at least a set amount of coins older than five years; it is listed with its transaction id, block and value-weighted coin age.
- Every figure is pinned to the block it was read at, and destinations are labelled only from the address registry, with each label's source.

## Data it needs

- `bitcoin_supply_daily` (to build): Bitcoin issued, supply by coin age band and by output script type (including coins whose public keys are already exposed), supply last moved long ago, and cost-basis measures.
- `whale_transfers` (to build): Transfers above a size threshold per token and chain, with sender and receiver labels (exchange, fund, bridge, unknown).
- `address_labels` (to build): Labels for known addresses: exchanges, bridges, protocols, funds, treasuries, sanctioned addresses and known attackers.
- Source: getblock verbosity 3 for every block: each input's prevout height and value
- Source: Block timestamps, to turn creation heights into ages
- Source: The UTXO set at each day's last block, for the supply still unmoved in each age band
- Source: The address label registry for where moved coins went, each label with its source

## Questions

### What is a dormant bitcoin wallet?

An address or set of outputs whose coins have not moved for a long time, often five years or more. Dormancy is measured per output: the time since the coins were created, which resets whenever they are spent.

### Why do dormant bitcoin wallets wake up?

Owners consolidate or upgrade to newer address types, and custodians and exchanges rotate keys. Estates and bankruptcy trustees distribute coins, and some holders sell. The chain shows the movement and the coins' age, not the reason, so the dashboard shows only what a public source supports.

### What is coin days destroyed?

A measure of how much dormancy a spend ends: the value of each spent input times the number of days it had sat unmoved, summed over a day. Moving one old coin destroys far more coin days than moving many new ones.

### Does a satoshi-era coin moving mean Satoshi moved it?

No. Many people mined bitcoin in 2009 and 2010, and coin age alone says nothing about who controls a coin today. A move is attributed only when the owner or a public record identifies it.

### Does old bitcoin moving mean it is being sold?

Not necessarily. Many moves are owners securing coins in new wallets. If the coins later reach a labelled exchange deposit address, a sale becomes more likely. The dashboard follows each large move's next hop to show where the coins went.

## Glossary

- **Revived supply**: Bitcoin spent from outputs older than an age threshold, such as five years, over a day or a week.
- **Coin days destroyed**: Each spent input's value times the days it sat unmoved, summed over a period. It weighs old coins far more than new ones.
- **Dormancy**: The time an output has gone unspent since the block that created it.
