**Question:** At what hour and on which weekday is Ethereum gas usually cheapest?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Ethereum](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/ethereum)
- Chains: Ethereum
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Ethereum's base fee follows demand for block space, and demand follows people: trading hours, mints and bots that run on schedules. Over weeks, that leaves a pattern by hour and weekday. This dashboard shows the median base fee for every hour of the week over the last 90 days, so the usual quiet hours stand out.

Use it to time transactions that can wait, such as moving funds between your own wallets or claiming rewards. A pattern is a tendency, not a promise: a popular mint or a market move can make any hour expensive, so the latest week is shown beside the long-run pattern and the current fee is on the gas tracker.

## Blueprint

### Pattern

The median price per gas by hour and weekday, and the quietest hours.

- **Cheapest hour of the week**: The weekday and UTC hour with the lowest median price per gas over the selected window.
- **Median at the cheapest hour** (gwei): The median price per gas in that cheapest hour over the selected window.
- **Weekend vs weekday** (%): How far the weekend median price per gas sat below or above the weekday median over the window.
- **Now vs the usual** (%): The latest block's base fee against the window's median for the same weekday and hour, above or below.
- **Gas by hour and weekday** (gwei): Median price per gas for each UTC hour (columns) and weekday (rows) over the selected window.
- **Median by hour of day** (gwei): Median price per gas by UTC hour across all weekdays, with the spread between the quartiles.
- **Median by weekday** (gwei): Median price per gas by weekday across all hours over the selected window.

### Latest week

The last 7 days hour by hour against the long-run pattern.

- **Median, last 7 days** (gwei): Median price per gas over every block of the last 7 days.
- **Last 7 days vs the window** (%): The last 7 days' median price per gas against the median of the whole selected window.
- **Last 7 days, hour by hour** (gwei): Hourly median price per gas over the last 7 days, with the long-run median for each hour drawn behind it.

Filters: Window (Last 30, 60 or 90 days); Measure (Base fee only, or base fee plus the median tip).

## How it will be measured

- Every block's base_fee_per_gas over the trailing 90 days is grouped by the UTC hour and weekday of its timestamp, and the median of each group is shown.
- The median priority fee of each block, from the tips its transactions paid, can be added for a total price per gas, so the heatmap reflects what a typical transaction paid.
- The latest 7 days are shown apart from the 90-day pattern, so a change in habits or a busy week can be seen against the long run.
- Medians are used rather than means so a single spike does not color a whole hour; every cell names its block range and block count as its receipt.

## Data it needs

- `gas_blocks` (to build): Base fee, priority fee percentiles, gas used and gas limit for each block on fee-market chains, for a near-live gas tracker.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- `native_prices_daily` (to build): Reference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time.
- Source: Block headers on Ethereum: base_fee_per_gas and timestamp for every block in the trailing 90 days
- Source: Median effective priority fee per block, from transaction receipts
- Source: Chainlink ETH/USD feed for the optional USD view

## Questions

### When is Ethereum gas usually cheapest?

Fees tend to be lower when fewer people and bots are active, which has often meant weekends and late-night hours in the Americas and Europe. The pattern shifts over time, so this dashboard measures it from the last 90 days of blocks instead of repeating an old rule of thumb.

### Is Ethereum gas cheaper on weekends?

Often, because trading and business activity fall. The weekday rows of the heatmap show whether that held over the last 90 days, and how far the weekend median sat from the weekday median.

### Why are the hours in UTC?

Block timestamps are compared in UTC, and one time zone keeps the pattern the same for everyone. Convert the hour to your own time zone when you plan; the cheapest hours are the same moments wherever you are.

### Will gas be low at the cheapest hour every day?

Not necessarily. The heatmap shows medians, and any hour can spike when a popular mint, an airdrop claim or a market move fills blocks. Check the current base fee before sending; the pattern helps choose when to look.

## Glossary

- **Base fee**: The protocol-set minimum price per gas in a block, adjusted each block from how full the last one was, and burned.
- **Median**: The middle value of a sorted set: half the blocks in a cell had a lower base fee and half a higher one.
- **UTC**: Coordinated Universal Time, the time standard block timestamps are read in here.
