**Question:** How many transactions and active addresses does Ethereum mainnet have per day?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Ethereum](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/ethereum)
- Chains: Ethereum
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Ethereum mainnet's daily transaction count and its active addresses are the simplest measures of how much the chain is used. This dashboard counts both from every block of each UTC day, splits transactions by type and shows how many addresses sent a transaction and how many appeared for the first time. Each count names the day's first and last block, so a record day can be re-counted from its receipt.

Raw counts can mislead. Low fees invite dust transfers and address-poisoning spam that inflate both transactions and addresses, so the dashboard flags transactions whose only effect is a token transfer of less than one whole token and shows activity with and without them. Read the adjusted line to compare days; read the raw line to match what the chain recorded.

## Blueprint

### Overview

The latest complete day and the trend in transactions and active addresses.

- **Transactions, latest day** (count): Transactions included in blocks on the latest complete UTC day, flagged spam included.
- **Active senders** (addresses): Distinct addresses that sent at least one included transaction on the latest complete day.
- **New addresses** (addresses): Addresses whose first transaction, sent or received, fell on the latest complete day.
- **Flagged spam share** (%): Share of the latest complete day's transactions that the spam rule flagged as dust or address poisoning.
- **Transactions per day** (count): Transactions per day over the selected period, raw and with flagged spam left out.
- **Active senders and new addresses per day** (addresses): Active senders and new addresses per day over the selected period.

### Composition

What the activity is made of: transaction types, spam and gas.

- **Gas used, latest day** (gas): Total gas used by every transaction included on the latest complete day.
- **Transactions per sender** (count): Transactions per active sender on the latest complete day; a sudden jump often points to automated senders.
- **Transactions by type** (count): Daily transactions split by type: legacy, access-list, EIP-1559, blob-carrying and set-code.
- **Flagged spam and the rest** (count): Daily transactions split into flagged spam and everything else, to show when campaigns start and stop.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, 90 days, a year or all history); Spam (All activity, or flagged dust and poisoning left out).

## How it will be measured

- Transactions are counted from every block of each UTC day and split by type: legacy, access-list, EIP-1559, blob-carrying and EIP-7702 set-code transactions.
- Active addresses are the distinct senders (from_address) of included transactions that day; new addresses are those whose first transaction, sent or received, falls on that day.
- Likely spam is flagged when a transaction's only effect is ERC-20 transfers of less than one whole token, the pattern of dust and address-poisoning campaigns; flagged activity is shown apart, never deleted.
- Each day's figures name the first and last block of the day and the reads behind them, so a record can be re-counted from its receipt.

## Data it needs

- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- `token_transfers_daily` (to build): ERC-20 and native transfer counts, volume and unique senders and receivers per token per chain per day.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- Source: Every Ethereum block's transactions: type, from_address, to_address and gas_used
- Source: ERC-20 Transfer logs with a value below one whole token, to flag dust and address-poisoning activity
- Source: First appearance of each address since genesis, for new-address counts
- Source: Block timestamps, to assign blocks to UTC days

## Questions

### How many transactions does Ethereum process per day?

The count changes daily with demand and fees, and it can rise when the gas limit grows and fees fall. This dashboard shows the count for every day from blocks, beside a version that leaves out flagged spam, so a high count can be read in context.

### What counts as an active address?

Here, an address is active on a day when it sends at least one transaction that is included in a block. Addresses that only receive tokens are counted as new addresses when they first appear, but not as active senders.

### Why do spam transactions inflate activity?

When fees are low, sending many tiny transfers costs little. Address-poisoning campaigns send dust from lookalike addresses so victims copy the wrong one, and each of those transfers adds transactions and addresses that reflect no real use. Flagging them keeps daily comparisons fair.

### Do layer 2 transactions count?

No. This dashboard counts Ethereum mainnet only. Rollups settle their batches to mainnet in a few transactions each, so their users' activity appears on the layer 2 pages instead.

### What are Ethereum transaction types?

Each transaction carries a type number that tells clients how to read it: legacy, access-list, EIP-1559 fee-market, blob-carrying since Dencun and set-code since Pectra. The mix shows which features people use, such as how many transactions carry blobs or delegate an account.

## Glossary

- **Active address**: An address that sent at least one transaction included in a block on the day counted.
- **Address poisoning**: A scam that sends tiny or fake transfers from an address resembling one the victim uses, hoping they copy it by mistake.
- **Transaction type**: The number that tells clients how to read a transaction's fields: legacy, access list, EIP-1559, blob or set-code.
