# Ethereum L2 TVL: Value Locked in Rollup Bridges

> L2 TVL for each Ethereum rollup, split into canonically bridged, externally bridged and natively minted value, from bridge escrow balances and token supply.

**Question:** How much value is locked on each Ethereum layer 2, and how much of it sits in canonical bridges on Ethereum?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Layer 2s](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/layer-2)
- Chains: Multi-chain, Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, ZKsync, Linea, Scroll, Unichain
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Layer 2 TVL is the value of the assets held on each Ethereum layer 2. This dashboard measures it by where those assets come from: tokens locked in the rollup's canonical bridge on Ethereum, tokens brought in through other bridges and tokens minted natively on the layer 2, each read at day-end blocks.

The split matters. Assets in the canonical bridge are secured by the rollup's own contracts and proofs. Externally bridged tokens depend on another bridge's verifiers, and natively minted tokens on their issuer. A chain can hold a large total with little of it in its canonical bridge.

Values use on-chain price feeds where they exist and a recorded price source otherwise. Tokens with neither are counted in token units and left out of the USD total, which the dashboard says beside every figure.

## Blueprint

### Overview

Value on every covered layer 2 and how it splits by source.

- **Value on covered L2s** (USD): Total value secured across covered layer 2s at the latest day-end block, priced tokens only.
- **Canonically bridged share** (%): The share of that value locked in the rollups' canonical bridges on Ethereum.
- **Externally bridged share** (%): The share of that value brought in through third-party bridges.
- **Natively minted share** (%): The share of that value minted directly on the layer 2s by their issuers.
- **Value by layer 2 and source** (USD): Each covered layer 2's value at the latest read, split into canonically bridged, externally bridged and natively minted.

### By chain

One layer 2's value over time, by source and by asset.

- **Value on this L2** (USD): The chosen layer 2's value secured at the latest day-end block.
- **30-day change** (%): The change in the chosen layer 2's value against thirty days earlier, from the same reads.
- **Asset mix**: The chosen layer 2's value by asset group: ETH and liquid staking tokens, stablecoins, wrapped bitcoin and other tokens.
- **Value over time by source** (USD): The chosen layer 2's value at each day-end block, split into canonically bridged, externally bridged and natively minted.

Filters: Layer 2 (Every covered layer 2); Period (Last month, quarter or year).

## How it will be measured

- Canonically bridged value is the ETH balance of each rollup's portal or bridge contract and the ERC-20 balances of its escrow contracts on Ethereum, read with balanceOf at the last block of each day.
- Natively minted value is totalSupply() of tokens issued directly on the layer 2, such as native USDC; externally bridged value is the supply of tokens that third-party bridges mint on the layer 2.
- Each token is counted once: bridged copies are matched to their escrow and never added on top of it, and receipt tokens from DeFi deposits are not counted at all.
- USD values use Chainlink feeds at the same block where one exists, and a recorded off-chain price named beside the figure otherwise; tokens with neither are left unpriced, never valued at zero.

## Data it needs

- `bridge_flows_daily` (to build): Deposits into and withdrawals out of canonical and major third-party bridges by chain, token and day, plus escrow balances at day end.
- `token_supply_daily` (to build): Total supply of each registry token on each chain at day end: wrapped BTC, liquid staking tokens, tokenized assets and other tracked tokens.
- `stablecoin_supply_daily` (published): Native supply of each USD and EUR stablecoin on each covered chain at the chain's last block of each day, from totalSupply() reads, with bridged copies kept apart.
- `native_prices_daily` (to build): Reference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time.
- Source: ETH balances of each rollup's portal and bridge contracts on Ethereum, such as Base's OptimismPortal, at day-end blocks
- Source: ERC-20 balanceOf of escrow contracts on Ethereum: the OP Stack L1StandardBridge, Arbitrum gateways and their equivalents
- Source: totalSupply() of natively minted and externally bridged tokens on each layer 2
- Source: Chainlink price feeds for ETH and major tokens
- Source: Off-chain prices for long-tail tokens, each recorded with its source

## Questions

### What is L2 TVL?

The total value of the assets on a layer 2: everything bridged in from Ethereum or other chains plus tokens minted on the layer 2 itself. It differs from DeFi TVL, which counts only what is deposited in DeFi apps.

### What is the difference between canonically and externally bridged assets?

Canonically bridged assets are locked in the rollup's own bridge on Ethereum and can be withdrawn through its proof system. Externally bridged assets arrive through a third-party bridge, so their safety rests on that bridge's verifiers and contracts rather than on the rollup's.

### Why is native USDC counted as natively minted?

Circle issues USDC directly on several layer 2s and moves it between chains by burning it on one and minting it on another. No escrow on Ethereum backs those tokens; the issuer does, so they count as natively minted rather than bridged.

### Which layer 2 has the most value locked?

The dashboard ranks covered layer 2s by their value at the latest day-end block, with the split for each, so the answer follows the latest reads rather than a fixed claim.

## Glossary

- **Value secured**: Every asset held on a layer 2, whether it came through its canonical bridge, through other bridges or was minted natively.
- **Canonically bridged**: Assets locked in a rollup's own bridge contracts on Ethereum.
- **Natively minted**: Tokens issued directly on the layer 2 by their issuer, with no escrow on Ethereum behind them.
