About

What it answers, and for whom.

Farcaster is a decentralized social protocol whose accounts live on-chain. Every account is a numbered Farcaster ID, or fid, registered in a contract on OP Mainnet, and each must rent storage for its messages. The keys that let apps post on a user's behalf are registered there too, so account growth, storage rent and app sign-ins can be counted exactly.

Casts, likes and follows travel on Snapchain, Farcaster's own network for messages, and are not on OP Mainnet. This dashboard sticks to what the contracts record. It counts the fids registered each day and in total, the storage units rented at the contract's price and the app keys added or removed, and it shows whether each registration was paid by the user or by an app.

Method

How it will be measured.

Every figure will be read at a block, kept with its source and its exact read, and open a receipt anyone can re-check.

How receipts work →
  1. New accounts are Register events from Farcaster's IdRegistry on OP Mainnet per UTC day; the highest fid issued is the total ever registered.
  2. Storage rented is read from the StorageRegistry's Rent events, in units, with the ETH paid; the unit price comes from the contract's price read at the latest block.
  3. App keys are Add and Remove events from the KeyRegistry. Each key lets one app publish messages for one account, so keys added per day track sign-ins to apps.
  4. A registration counts as paid by an app when the transaction's sender is not the account's own custody address, such as an app's address or the Bundler contract.

Questions

Questions people ask.

How many Farcaster users are there?

Every Farcaster account is a numbered fid registered on OP Mainnet, so the number of fids is an exact public count of accounts. It is not a count of active people: activity happens in messages on Snapchain, which this dashboard does not measure.

How much does it cost to join Farcaster?

Registering an fid requires renting at least one storage unit, priced in US dollars and paid in ETH at an oracle rate. The dashboard reads the current price from the StorageRegistry, and shows how often apps pay it for new users.

What is Farcaster storage rent?

Storage units set how many casts, reactions and follows an account can keep. A unit lasts a year, and an account that does not renew loses the space after a grace period, with its oldest messages pruned first.

What are Farcaster signer keys?

When a user signs in to a Farcaster app, the app adds a key to the KeyRegistry that lets it post for that account. Keys added per day show how many app sign-ins happen, and removals show users revoking an app's access.

Is Farcaster fully on-chain?

No. Identity, keys and storage live in contracts on OP Mainnet, while messages travel on Snapchain. That split is why this dashboard can count accounts and storage exactly but leaves daily posting activity out.

fid
A Farcaster ID: the number an account is registered under in the IdRegistry, owned by a custody address that can transfer or recover it.
Storage unit
A year of message storage for one account, rented from the StorageRegistry; registering an fid requires at least one.
Snapchain
Farcaster's own network that carries casts, reactions and follows, separate from OP Mainnet and Ethereum.
