**Question:** How much data is stored on Filecoin, how much capacity is proven and how much FIL is burned and locked?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [DePIN](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/depin)
- Chains: Filecoin
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Filecoin is a storage network in which providers prove, on-chain and on a schedule, that they keep the data they committed. Two numbers get called its size: storage power, the capacity providers have proven, and the data clients actually stored through deals. They measure different things, so this dashboard shows both, along with the share of data verified through Filecoin Plus.

It also follows the paths data takes onto the network, from the original deal market to direct onboarding and the warm storage of Filecoin Onchain Cloud, whose proofs of data possession are checked by contracts. On the economic side, it reads the FIL burned through base fees and penalties and the FIL locked as provider collateral, from the chain's own state.

## Blueprint

### Storage

Proven capacity, stored data and how data arrives.

- **Data stored** (PiB): Data in active deals and verified claims at the latest tipset.
- **Quality-adjusted power** (EiB): Quality-adjusted storage power at the latest tipset: proven capacity, with verified data weighted more.
- **Verified data** (%): Share of stored data that is verified through Filecoin Plus.
- **Storage providers** (count): Storage providers with proven power at the latest tipset.
- **Data onboarded by path** (TiB): Data onboarded per day by path: market deals, direct onboarding of verified claims and Filecoin Onchain Cloud warm storage.

### FIL burned and locked

What the network burns and what providers lock.

- **FIL burned** (FIL): FIL burned on the latest complete day: base fees, penalties and other burns.
- **FIL locked** (FIL): FIL locked as provider pledge collateral at the latest tipset.
- **Burned by reason** (FIL): FIL burned per week by reason: base fees, fault and termination penalties and other burns.
- **FIL by state** (FIL): FIL by state over the period: vested, mined, locked and burned, as the chain reports its circulating supply.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, 12 months or since 2020).

## How it will be measured

- Storage power is read from the power actor at the latest tipset, as raw capacity and as quality-adjusted power, which weighs verified data more.
- Stored data is the size of active deals and verified claims at the latest tipset, from the market actor and the verified registry, so data onboarded with or without a market deal is counted once.
- Warm storage is the data in Filecoin Onchain Cloud's PDP data sets, read from its contracts on the Filecoin EVM, with proofs checked against their schedule.
- FIL burned is the daily change in the balance of Filecoin's burn address, split by reason using the messages that paid it; locked FIL is provider pledge collateral at day end.

## Data it needs

- `depin_networks_daily` (to build): Usage and token flows of decentralized physical infrastructure networks: burns for usage, emissions to operators, and active nodes where on-chain.
- Source: Power actor state at the latest tipset: raw byte and quality-adjusted power per provider
- Source: Market actor deals and verified registry claims, with sizes and terms
- Source: Filecoin Onchain Cloud PDP contracts on the Filecoin EVM: data sets, pieces and proofs
- Source: Burn address balance per day and the messages that paid base fees and penalties
- Source: Circulating supply reads: vested, mined, burned and locked FIL

## Questions

### How much data is stored on Filecoin?

Two figures answer it differently. Storage power is the capacity providers have proven; stored data is what clients actually put into deals and verified claims. The dashboard shows both, and the gap between them shows how much proven capacity holds client data.

### What is Filecoin Plus?

A program in which allocators grant DataCap to clients storing useful data. Data stored with DataCap counts for more quality-adjusted power, and so earns providers more rewards, which is why verified data is tracked apart from other data.

### What is PDP on Filecoin?

Proof of Data Possession, used by Filecoin Onchain Cloud's warm storage. Providers prove at regular intervals that they still hold a client's data, contracts check the proofs and payments stop if the proofs stop.

### How is FIL burned?

Every message pays a base fee that is burned, as on Ethereum, and penalties for faults or terminated sectors are burned too. Burns go to a dedicated burn address, so each day's total is that address's balance change.

### Is Filecoin EVM-compatible?

Yes. The Filecoin Virtual Machine has run EVM smart contracts since 2023, and newer services such as Filecoin Onchain Cloud keep their contracts there, which is where this dashboard reads warm storage.

## Glossary

- **Quality-adjusted power**: Storage power weighted by the kind of data stored, so verified Filecoin Plus data counts for more than other data.
- **DataCap**: An allowance that lets a client make verified deals under Filecoin Plus, granted by allocators.
- **Sector**: The unit of storage a provider seals and proves on Filecoin; deals and claims are packed into sectors.
- **PDP**: Proof of Data Possession: frequent, light proofs that a provider still holds a client's data, used for warm storage.
