# Gas Spent Calculator: Total Fees Paid by a Wallet

> Gas spent calculator for any wallet: total transaction fees paid on Ethereum and major layer 2s by year, in ETH and USD, with failed transactions split out.

**Question:** How much has this wallet paid in gas fees on each chain, and in each year?

- Kind: Table in Voltfin Strata
- Topic: [Wallets and whales](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/wallets)
- Chains: Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, Polygon, BNB Chain, Linea, Scroll
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Every transaction a wallet sends pays a fee, and over the years those fees add up to a total most people have never seen. This table adds them up for one address, chain by chain and year by year: the gas used, what it cost in the native token, what it was worth in US dollars on the day and how much went to failed transactions that paid for nothing.

Fees are read from each transaction's receipt, so the totals are exact, not estimates. On rollups the fee has two parts, execution on the layer 2 and the cost of posting data to Ethereum, and both are counted. The result is a record a holder can check line by line and keep beside the tax and accounting records they already hold.

## Blueprint

One row: One row per wallet per chain per year, plus a total row per chain

- **Chain** (`chain`): The chain the fees were paid on.
- **Year** (`year`): The calendar year of the transactions in the row.
- **Transactions** (`transactions`): Transactions the wallet sent in the year, failed ones included.
- **Gas used** (`gas_used`, gas): Total gas used by those transactions, from their receipts.
- **Fees paid** (`fees_native`, native token): Total fees in the chain's native token, rollup data fees included.
- **Fees in USD** (`fees_usd`, USD): Each transaction's fee valued at the native token's price on its day, summed.
- **Rollup data fees** (`l1_data_fees`, native token): The part of the fees that paid for posting data to Ethereum, on rollups only.
- **Failed transaction fees** (`failed_fees`, native token): Fees paid by transactions that reverted.
- **Average fee** (`average_fee_usd`, USD): Fees in USD divided by the number of transactions.
- **Largest fee** (`largest_fee`): The single most expensive transaction in the row, linked to its receipt.
- **Receipt** (`receipt`): The transaction list and receipt reads behind the row.

## How it will be measured

- Fees are summed over transactions the wallet sent: gasUsed times effectiveGasPrice from each receipt, so failed transactions, which still pay for gas, are included and also shown on their own.
- On rollups that report the data fee separately, such as OP Stack chains, the receipt's l1Fee is added; on Arbitrum the data cost is already inside gasUsed, and each row's receipt names the fee fields it used.
- USD values use the native token's oracle price on the day of each transaction, so a fee paid years ago keeps the value it had when it was paid.
- For a smart account, fees come from the actualGasCost in each UserOperationEvent it paid for; transactions sponsored by a paymaster or a relayer are left out, since the wallet did not pay them.

## Data it needs

- `native_prices_daily` (to build): Reference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- `account_abstraction_daily` (to build): ERC-4337 UserOperations, bundlers and paymasters, and EIP-7702 delegations per chain per day.
- Source: Transactions sent by the address on each covered chain, with receipt gasUsed, effectiveGasPrice and status
- Source: Rollup fee fields: l1Fee where receipts report it separately and the L1 component inside gasUsed on Arbitrum
- Source: UserOperationEvent actualGasCost for smart accounts at the ERC-4337 EntryPoint
- Source: Chainlink native token feeds at day-end blocks for USD values

## Questions

### How much have I spent on gas?

Enter the address. The table adds up the fee of every transaction it sent on each covered chain, from the receipts, and shows the totals by year in the native token and in US dollars at the time. Each row links to the transactions behind it.

### Do failed transactions cost gas?

Yes. A transaction that reverts still uses gas up to the point it failed and pays for it, even though its action does not happen. The table shows fees on failed transactions in a column of their own.

### Why do layer 2 fees have two parts?

A rollup charges for executing the transaction on the layer 2 and for posting its data to Ethereum. Some rollups report the data cost as a separate receipt field and others fold it into gas used; the table counts both either way.

### How are gas fees treated for taxes?

Rules differ by country, and this table does not interpret them. It gives a per-year record of the fees each chain charged a wallet, valued at the time, with a receipt for every row: the raw input an accountant or tax software needs.

### Does it count fees paid by someone else?

No. Transactions a paymaster, a relayer or an app paid for are left out, because the wallet did not pay them. For smart accounts, only the gas the account itself paid through the ERC-4337 EntryPoint is counted.

## Glossary

- **Effective gas price**: The price per unit of gas a transaction actually paid: the block's base fee plus the tip it gave, never more than its maximum.
- **L1 data fee**: The part of a rollup fee that pays for posting the transaction's data to Ethereum.
- **Sponsored transaction**: A transaction whose gas is paid by someone other than the sender, such as a paymaster or a relayer.
