**Question:** How much HNT is burned for Helium network usage each month, and how many hotspots are added?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [DePIN](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/depin)
- Chains: Solana
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Helium is a decentralized wireless network: people run hotspots that provide IoT and mobile coverage, and the network pays them in HNT. Customers pay for usage with Data Credits, which can only be created by burning HNT at a fixed dollar price. Burns for usage are Helium's revenue, and since the network moved to Solana, every one is a Solana transaction.

This dashboard reads them by subnetwork: Data Credits burned for data on the IoT and Mobile networks, the HNT burned to create them, the HNT emitted to hotspots and stakers and the net change in HNT supply. Hotspot onboarding is counted from the onboarding instructions on Solana, by subnetwork and month.

Some of Helium's most quoted figures, such as mobile data offloaded from carriers and subscriber counts, are reported by the operator of its mobile service rather than recorded on-chain. They appear in their own tiles, labelled with their source.

## Blueprint

### Usage and supply

Data Credits burned for usage, and HNT burned against HNT emitted.

- **Data Credits burned, this month** (DC): Data Credits burned for data transfer in the current month on the selected subnetworks.
- **Usage revenue, this month** (USD): The dollar value of this month's usage burns at the fixed Data Credit price.
- **HNT burned, this month** (HNT): HNT burned to mint Data Credits in the current month, for usage and fees together.
- **Net HNT supply change** (HNT): HNT emitted minus HNT burned in the current month's epochs; a negative value means supply shrank.
- **Burns by subnetwork** (DC): Data Credits burned per month, split into IoT usage, Mobile usage and onboarding and location fees.
- **Burned against emitted** (HNT): HNT burned and HNT emitted per epoch over the selected period, with the net emissions cap marked.

### Hotspots

Hotspots onboarded and rewarded by subnetwork, with offload as reported.

- **Hotspots onboarded, this month** (count): Hotspots onboarded on Solana in the current month on the selected subnetworks.
- **Hotspots with claimed rewards** (count): Hotspots whose rewards were claimed on Solana in the last 30 days, a floor for the hotspots in use.
- **Onboarding by month** (count): Hotspots onboarded per month, split into IoT and Mobile.
- **Carrier offload, as reported** (TB): Mobile data offloaded from carriers per month as the operator reports it, labelled off-chain with its source.

Filters: Subnetwork (IoT, Mobile or both); Period (Last 30 days, last 12 months or since the move to Solana).

## How it will be measured

- Data Credit burns are the burn instructions of Helium's Data Credits program on Solana, split by subnetwork, with usage burns kept apart from onboarding and location fees.
- HNT burned is read from the burns that mint Data Credits; HNT emitted is the issuance minted each epoch to subnetwork reward pools and stakers.
- Net supply change is HNT emitted minus HNT burned over the same epochs, checked against HNT total supply at the first and last slot of the period.
- Hotspots onboarded are the onboarding instructions of Helium's entity manager program per subnetwork; a hotspot onboarded twice is counted once.
- Operator-reported offload and subscriber figures are recorded with their source and period and are never mixed with on-chain counts.

## Data it needs

- `depin_networks_daily` (to build): Usage and token flows of decentralized physical infrastructure networks: burns for usage, emissions to operators, and active nodes where on-chain.
- `dex_swaps_daily` (to build): Swap counts and volume per DEX, pool and chain per day, decoded from Swap events, valued with stablecoin legs and oracle prices.
- Source: Helium Data Credit burn instructions on Solana per subnetwork (IoT, Mobile)
- Source: HNT emissions and burn amounts per epoch
- Source: Hotspot onboarding instructions per subnetwork
- Source: HNT total supply at daily slots
- Source: Offload volume and subscriber counts reported by the operator (off-chain, labelled)

## Questions

### What are Helium Data Credits?

Data Credits are Helium's usage credits. They are created only by burning HNT at a fixed dollar price, cannot be transferred and are spent to send data over the network or to onboard hotspots.

### How much HNT is burned each month?

The dashboard sums the HNT burned to mint Data Credits in each month, split into usage and other fees, and compares it with the HNT emitted over the same epochs.

### Is HNT deflationary?

It depends on the period. HNT supply shrinks in an epoch when the HNT burned for Data Credits exceeds what the network mints, including the burned HNT it re-mints up to a cap, and grows otherwise. The dashboard shows the net change epoch by epoch.

### How many Helium hotspots are there?

Hotspots are counted when they are onboarded on Solana, by subnetwork. Onboarded is not the same as active: a hotspot can stop providing coverage without leaving the registry, so the dashboard shows onboarded hotspots and hotspots that claimed rewards separately.

### What is Helium carrier offload?

Mobile carriers can send their subscribers' data over Helium's mobile hotspots instead of their own towers. The offloaded data is reported by the operator off-chain, so the dashboard shows it as reported, with its source.

## Glossary

- **Data Credit**: Helium's non-transferable usage credit, minted by burning HNT at a fixed dollar price and spent on data transfer and network fees.
- **Hotspot**: A device that provides Helium coverage, for IoT sensors or for mobile phones, and earns HNT for it.
- **Subnetwork**: One of Helium's service networks, IoT or Mobile, each with its own hotspots, usage and share of rewards.
- **Net emissions**: Helium's rule that re-mints HNT burned for Data Credits, up to a cap per epoch, so burns above the cap reduce supply.
