**Question:** How secure and busy is Litecoin, and when is the next halving?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Layer 1 chains](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/chains)
- Chains: Litecoin
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Litecoin is a proof-of-work chain with two-and-a-half-minute blocks, a capped supply whose block subsidy halves about every four years and an optional privacy layer called MWEB. This dashboard reads every block to show the hashrate securing it, the countdown to the next halving with its projected date and the LTC held inside MWEB and moving in and out, along with the transactions and fees on the main chain.

MWEB keeps amounts private, but each block records the total LTC inside it, so the balance and the daily peg-ins and peg-outs can be read exactly. Litecoin is also the parent chain for Dogecoin's merged mining, which ties the two chains' hashrates together. Every figure carries a receipt with the block height and hash.

## Blueprint

### Network and halving

Hashrate, block times and the countdown to the next halving.

- **Hashrate** (TH/s): The hashrate implied by the latest complete day's difficulty and block intervals.
- **Blocks to the halving** (count): Blocks remaining until the next height at which the block subsidy halves.
- **Projected halving date** (date): The date the next halving is expected, from the blocks left and the median block time of the last 30 days.
- **Median block interval** (seconds): The median interval between blocks on the latest complete UTC day.
- **Hashrate and difficulty by day** (TH/s): Implied hashrate and difficulty each day over the selected period, with each difficulty retarget marked.

### MWEB and usage

LTC in MWEB with its peg-ins and peg-outs, beside main-chain transactions and fees.

- **LTC in MWEB** (LTC): All LTC held inside MWEB at the latest block, from the first output of the block's integrating transaction.
- **Peg-ins, latest day** (LTC): LTC moved from the main chain into MWEB on the latest complete day.
- **Transactions, latest day** (count): Main-chain transactions on the latest complete day, leaving out coinbase and integrating transactions.
- **Fees paid, latest day** (LTC): Fees paid on the latest complete day on the main chain and in MWEB kernels.
- **MWEB balance by day** (LTC): LTC held in MWEB at each day's end over the selected period, with the day's peg-ins and peg-outs.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, 90 days or a year).

## How it will be measured

- Hashrate is implied from each day's difficulty and block intervals, read from block headers as for Bitcoin; it is an estimate of work, not a count of miners.
- Blocks to the halving count down to the next height at which the block subsidy halves, and the projected date assumes the median block time of the last 30 days.
- The MWEB balance is the value of the first output of each block's integrating transaction, which holds every LTC inside MWEB; daily peg-ins and peg-outs are the movements that balance records.
- Transactions and fees are read from the main chain, with MWEB kernel fees added; MWEB hides amounts and addresses, so only its kernel count and the balance moving in and out are shown, and every figure carries a receipt.

## Data it needs

- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- `privacy_pools_daily` (to build): Deposits into and withdrawals from privacy pools and shielded pools per protocol and day, and shielded supply where measurable.
- Source: Litecoin block headers: timestamp and bits, for difficulty, block intervals and implied hashrate
- Source: Coinbase transactions: subsidy and fees per block, for issuance and the halving schedule
- Source: The integrating transaction at the end of each block, whose first output holds the MWEB balance, and the block's MWEB peg-ins, peg-outs and kernels
- Source: Main-chain transactions: inputs, outputs and fees

## Questions

### When is the next Litecoin halving?

Litecoin's block subsidy halves at fixed block heights, roughly every four years, and the next halving falls in 2027. The dashboard counts the blocks left and projects the date from recent block times, so the estimate moves a little as hashrate changes.

### What is MWEB?

MimbleWimble Extension Blocks, an optional layer activated in 2022 that lets LTC move with confidential amounts. Coins enter MWEB by a peg-in and leave by a peg-out, both visible on the main chain, and the total held inside is recorded in every block, so its size is public while individual balances are not.

### Is Litecoin merged-mined with Dogecoin?

Yes. Miners work on Litecoin and submit the same work to Dogecoin, earning on both chains. Litecoin is the parent chain, so its blocks are mined as usual; the combined reward is part of why the two chains' hashrates move together.

### How long are Litecoin blocks?

Litecoin targets one block every two and a half minutes and retargets difficulty every few days to hold that pace. The dashboard measures the median interval each day, which runs shorter than target while hashrate is rising and longer while it falls.

### Does Litecoin have a supply cap?

Yes. Each halving shrinks the subsidy until issuance ends, so total supply approaches a fixed maximum set at launch. The halving page counts down to the next cut, and the issuance in each block is read from its coinbase.

## Glossary

- **MWEB**: MimbleWimble Extension Blocks, Litecoin's optional confidential layer, whose amounts are hidden while its total balance is public.
- **Peg-in**: A main-chain transaction that moves LTC into MWEB; a peg-out moves it back to an ordinary address.
- **Integrating transaction**: The transaction at the end of each Litecoin block, also called HogEx, whose first output holds all LTC inside MWEB.
- **Halving**: The fixed block height at which Litecoin's block subsidy is cut in half.
