**Question:** What yield does staked SOL earn, and how much SOL is staked?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Solana](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/solana)
- Chains: Solana
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Staked SOL earns new SOL from the network's inflation every epoch, shared among stake accounts by their stake and by how well their validator performed, minus the validator's commission. Many validators also pass on part of the MEV tips their blocks collect. This dashboard measures what stakers actually received each epoch, the inflation that funds it and the share of all SOL that is staked.

Read the yield with dilution in mind: inflation rewards are new tokens, so a staker's share of the supply grows only by the amount their yield exceeds inflation. The dashboard shows the gross yield, the yield after commission, the part from MEV tips and the exchange-rate yield of the largest liquid staking tokens, each pinned to the epoch it was read at, with a receipt.

## Blueprint

### Yield

What staked SOL earned in recent epochs, and what the yield is made of.

- **Gross staking yield** (%): The annualized reward rate of staked SOL in the latest complete epoch, before validator commission.
- **Yield after commission** (%): The annualized rate stake accounts received in the latest epoch after their validator's commission, as a stake-weighted median.
- **Inflation rate** (%): The protocol's current annual inflation rate, read with getInflationRate at the epoch boundary.
- **MEV tips to stakers** (%): The annualized yield stakers received from MEV tips in the latest epoch, from tip distribution claims.
- **Staking yield by epoch** (%): Gross yield, yield after commission and inflation per epoch over the selected period, so the real yield shows as the gap between them.

### Stake

How much SOL is staked, and liquid staking yields.

- **SOL staked** (SOL): Total activated stake at the latest epoch boundary, from getVoteAccounts.
- **Share of SOL staked** (%): Activated stake divided by total supply at the same slot.
- **Stake by commission** (%): The share of activated stake delegated to validators at each commission level in the latest epoch.
- **Liquid staking yields**: The largest stake pool tokens, with their SOL exchange rate, their yield over the last 10 epochs and the stake they hold.

Filters: Period (Last 10, 50 or 180 epochs).

## How it will be measured

- Rewards per epoch come from getInflationReward for a sample of stake accounts across validators, compared with their effective stake in the same epoch.
- Annual yield compounds the per-epoch reward rate over the number of epochs in a year, measured from slot timestamps rather than assumed.
- Total activated stake comes from getVoteAccounts at each epoch boundary, and total supply from getSupply at the same slot, for the staked share.
- Commission is each vote account's commission in the epoch; MEV tips paid to stakers come from claims on the tip distribution program.
- Liquid staking yield is the change in each stake pool token's exchange rate between epochs, and every figure carries a receipt with the epoch and slots read.

## Data it needs

- `staking_networks_daily` (to build): Staked supply, staking ratio, validators and nominal rewards per proof-of-stake network per day.
- `lst_rates_daily` (to build): Exchange rates of liquid staking and restaking tokens (wstETH, rETH, cbETH, weETH and others) at day end, and the realized yield they imply.
- Source: getInflationRate and getEpochSchedule, and getInflationReward for sampled stake accounts per epoch
- Source: getVoteAccounts at each epoch boundary: activatedStake and commission per vote account
- Source: getSupply at the same slot, for total and circulating supply
- Source: Tip distribution program claims, for MEV tips paid to stakers per epoch
- Source: Stake pool account state (total lamports and pool token supply) per epoch, for liquid staking exchange rates

## Questions

### What is the Solana staking APY?

It is the annual rate staked SOL earns, compounded from what stake accounts received each epoch. The dashboard shows it before commission, after commission and with MEV tips, because the rate a staker gets depends on the validator chosen.

### Where does Solana's staking yield come from?

Mostly from inflation: the protocol issues new SOL each epoch at an annual rate that falls over time, and splits it among stakers. A smaller part comes from MEV tips and fees that validators share. Half of each base fee is burned, and priority fees go to the block's leader.

### What does validator commission do?

A validator keeps its commission, a percentage of the inflation rewards earned by the stake delegated to it, and passes on the rest. A lower commission raises the staker's yield, but a validator that performs poorly or goes offline earns less for everyone delegated to it.

### Is staking yield real income?

Only in part. Inflation rewards add new SOL for everyone who stakes, so unstaked SOL loses its share of the supply. The real yield is roughly the staking yield minus the inflation rate, which the dashboard shows beside the headline figure.

### How do liquid staking tokens earn yield?

A liquid staking token represents SOL staked through a stake pool. Rewards are added to the pool, so each token is worth more SOL over time, and the yield shows as a rising exchange rate rather than as new tokens.

## Glossary

- **Epoch**: A period of slots, about two days long, after which Solana pays staking rewards and updates stake.
- **Activated stake**: SOL delegated to a validator that has finished warming up and earns rewards in the current epoch.
- **Commission**: The share of inflation rewards a validator keeps before passing the rest to its delegators.
- **Liquid staking token**: A token from a stake pool that represents staked SOL and its rewards, and can be traded or used in DeFi.
