**Question:** How many validators secure Solana, and how concentrated is the stake?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Solana](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/solana)
- Chains: Solana
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Solana's validators produce its blocks and vote on them, and each one's weight in consensus is the stake delegated to it. A count of validators alone says little about decentralization: what matters is how stake is spread across them. This dashboard reads the validator set at every epoch boundary to show how many validators have stake, how much of it the largest ones hold and the smallest group that could stop the chain.

Use it to follow whether the set is growing or shrinking, which validators joined or left and how reliably each one produces blocks when it is the leader. Every figure comes from the vote accounts and block production records at an epoch boundary, pinned to the slot it was read at, with a receipt.

## Blueprint

### Validator set

How many validators have stake, and who joined or left.

- **Validators with stake** (count): Vote accounts with activated stake at the latest epoch boundary, current and delinquent together.
- **Delinquent validators** (count): Staked vote accounts reported as delinquent, having stopped voting, at the latest epoch boundary.
- **Joined last epoch** (count): Vote accounts with activated stake in the latest epoch that had none in the one before.
- **Left last epoch** (count): Vote accounts with activated stake in the previous epoch that have none in the latest.
- **Validators by epoch** (count): Validators with stake per epoch over the selected period, with joins and exits marked.

### Concentration

How stake is spread, and how reliably validators produce blocks.

- **Nakamoto coefficient** (count): The smallest number of validators whose combined stake exceeds one third of activated stake at the latest epoch boundary.
- **Stake held by the top 10** (%): The share of activated stake held by the 10 largest validators at the latest epoch boundary.
- **Stake by validator rank** (%): The share of activated stake held by each validator from largest to smallest, which shows how fast stake concentrates.
- **Validators**: Each validator's published name, stake, share of stake, commission and skip rate in the latest epoch.

Filters: Period (Last 10, 50 or 180 epochs).

## How it will be measured

- The validator set is read with getVoteAccounts at each epoch boundary: vote accounts with activated stake, split into current and delinquent, with their commission and stake.
- The Nakamoto coefficient is the smallest number of validators whose combined activated stake exceeds one third of the total, the share that can stop the chain from confirming blocks.
- Joins and exits compare the set of staked vote accounts between consecutive epochs.
- Skip rate comes from getBlockProduction per epoch: leader slots without a produced block divided by all leader slots, per validator and for the network.
- Validator names come from the validator info each operator publishes on-chain, and every figure carries a receipt with the epoch and slot read.

## Data it needs

- `staking_networks_daily` (to build): Staked supply, staking ratio, validators and nominal rewards per proof-of-stake network per day.
- `address_labels` (to build): Labels for known addresses: exchanges, bridges, protocols, funds, treasuries, sanctioned addresses and known attackers.
- Source: getVoteAccounts at each epoch boundary: current and delinquent vote accounts, activatedStake and commission
- Source: getBlockProduction per epoch: leader slots and blocks produced per validator identity
- Source: Validator info accounts in the Config program, for operator names and websites
- Source: Stake accounts per vote account, for the number of delegators

## Questions

### How many validators does Solana have?

The dashboard counts vote accounts with activated stake at each epoch boundary, split into those voting normally and those that are delinquent. Nodes that only serve data and never vote are not counted, so the figure is lower than the number of nodes on the network.

### What is the Nakamoto coefficient?

The smallest number of validators that together control enough stake to disrupt consensus. On Solana that threshold is one third of the stake, enough to stop the chain from confirming new blocks. A higher coefficient means stake is less concentrated.

### What is a delinquent validator?

A validator with stake that has stopped voting, usually because its node is offline, behind or misconfigured. Stake on a delinquent validator earns no rewards until it votes again, which is why delegators watch for it.

### Why does the validator count change?

Validators join when they attract enough stake to cover their costs and leave when they do not. Changes in what it costs to run a validator, and in large stake delegation programs, both move the count from epoch to epoch.

### What is skip rate?

The share of a validator's leader slots in which it produced no block. A high skip rate delays users' transactions and costs the validator and its delegators the fees those blocks would have earned.

## Glossary

- **Vote account**: The on-chain account a validator votes from; stake is delegated to it, and its commission is set on it.
- **Superminority**: The smallest group of validators holding more than one third of the stake; its size is the Nakamoto coefficient.
- **Leader slot**: A slot in which a given validator is scheduled to produce the block.
- **Delinquent**: The status of a staked vote account that has not voted recently enough to count as active.
