**Question:** How many transactions does Sui process, and what do they pay in gas?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Layer 1 chains](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/chains)
- Chains: Sui
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Sui is a layer 1 built on the Move language around objects: every coin, NFT and pool is an object with an owner, or a shared object that anyone can use. This dashboard reads Sui's checkpoints and transaction effects to show how much the network is used each day, how much of that activity needed consensus, what users paid in gas and how much SUI validators hold in stake.

Sui's gas has three parts, and they are worth reading separately: computation at the epoch's reference gas price, storage for the data a transaction writes and a rebate when data is deleted. The storage fund that holds storage fees and the SUI staked with validators are read at each epoch change. Every figure names the checkpoint it came from, with a receipt.

## Blueprint

### Activity

Transactions, senders, throughput and how much activity needed consensus.

- **Transactions, latest day** (count): Transactions finalized in Sui checkpoints on the latest complete UTC day.
- **Active addresses, latest day** (count): Distinct addresses that signed transactions on the latest complete day.
- **Average TPS, latest day** (tx per second): The latest complete day's transactions divided by the seconds its checkpoints span.
- **Shared-object share** (%): Transactions that used at least one shared object, and so needed consensus ordering, as a share of the day's transactions.
- **Transactions and active addresses by day** (count): Daily transactions and distinct senders over the selected period, so growth in users can be told apart from more activity per address.

### Gas and staking

The reference gas price, gas by part, the storage fund and SUI staked.

- **Reference gas price** (MIST): The reference gas price of the current epoch, in MIST per unit of computation, read from the system state.
- **Net gas fees, latest day** (SUI): Computation plus storage fees minus storage rebates for every transaction on the latest complete day.
- **SUI staked** (SUI): Total SUI staked with validators at the latest epoch change, from the system state.
- **Storage fund** (SUI): The SUI held in the storage fund at the latest epoch change, which backs the rebates owed on stored data.
- **Gas by part, by day** (SUI): Computation fees, storage fees and storage rebates each day over the selected period, with rebates shown below zero.

Filters: Period (Last 30 days, 90 days or a year).

## How it will be measured

- Transactions are counted from checkpoints, Sui's unit of finality, per UTC day; distinct senders are the addresses that signed them, with sponsored transactions credited to the sender rather than to the gas owner.
- Gas follows Sui's formula, read from each transaction's effects: computation cost plus storage cost minus the storage rebate, with the three parts and the non-refundable storage fee shown apart.
- The shared-object share counts transactions whose inputs include a shared object, which must be ordered by consensus, against those that touch only owned objects.
- The reference gas price, total stake and storage fund are read from the Sui system state at each epoch change, and every figure carries a receipt with the checkpoint it was read at.

## Data it needs

- `chain_activity_daily` (to build): Transactions, active sending addresses, new addresses, contracts created and gas used on each chain per day, counted from blocks and transactions.
- `chain_fees_daily` (to build): Fees paid per chain per day in the native token: base fee and priority fee percentiles, total fees, and the share burned where the chain burns fees.
- `staking_networks_daily` (to build): Staked supply, staking ratio, validators and nominal rewards per proof-of-stake network per day.
- Source: Sui checkpoints: sequence number, timestamp, transaction digests and the network totals in each checkpoint summary
- Source: Transaction effects: gasUsed with computationCost, storageCost, storageRebate and nonRefundableStorageFee
- Source: Transaction inputs, for whether each transaction reads or writes a shared object
- Source: SuiSystemState at each epoch change: reference gas price, total stake, validator set and storage fund balance

## Questions

### How are Sui gas fees calculated?

A Sui transaction pays a computation fee, its gas units times a gas price at or above the epoch's reference gas price, plus a storage fee for the data it writes. When it deletes or shrinks objects it gets most of their earlier storage fee back as a rebate, so its net fee can be small or even negative.

### What is the reference gas price?

A price per unit of computation that validators set at the start of each epoch. Each validator submits the price it is willing to work for, and the protocol picks the level supported by two thirds of stake. Validators can report peers that do not honor it, which lowers those peers' rewards.

### What is the storage fund?

A pool of SUI built from the storage fees users pay. It is held to pay future validators for storing data written in the past, and when data is deleted most of its storage fee is refunded from it; a small non-refundable part stays in the fund.

### What is the difference between owned and shared objects?

An owned object belongs to one address, so a transaction that touches only owned objects can be finalized without consensus ordering. Shared objects, such as a DEX pool, can be used by anyone, so transactions on them go through consensus. The dashboard shows how much activity takes each path.

### How does staking SUI work?

Holders delegate SUI to validators, whose voting power in each epoch follows their stake. Rewards come from gas fees and from a stake subsidy that steps down at set intervals, and they are paid at epoch boundaries, which come about once a day.

## Glossary

- **Checkpoint**: A certified set of finalized Sui transactions, issued in sequence; Sui's history is read checkpoint by checkpoint.
- **MIST**: The smallest unit of SUI, one billionth of a coin, in which gas prices and fees are recorded.
- **Reference gas price**: The price per unit of computation that Sui's validators set for each epoch through a stake-weighted survey.
- **Storage rebate**: The part of an object's storage fee returned when a transaction deletes or shrinks it.
- **Shared object**: An object any transaction may use, such as a liquidity pool; transactions on shared objects are ordered by consensus.
