**Question:** Which Ethereum layer 2s grew or shrank the most this month by activity, fees and value locked?

- Kind: Report in Voltfin Folio
- Topic: [Layer 2s](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/layer-2)
- Chains: Multi-chain, Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, ZKsync, Linea, Scroll, Unichain
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Each month this report ranks the covered Ethereum layer 2s on the measures that matter most: transactions, active addresses, the fees users paid, what each paid Ethereum and the value secured on it. Beside every rank sits the change against the previous month, so growth and decline are visible, not only size.

The report is dated and closed at the month's last block. Every figure in it cites the blocks and reads it came from, so any rank can be checked. The definitions stay the same from one edition to the next.

## Blueprint

### The month in one paragraph

Which layer 2s led on each measure, which grew or shrank the most and what changed in the ranking.

Cites: Layer 2s ranked this month; Largest gain in transactions; Largest gain in value secured.

### Activity league table

Each layer 2 ranked by monthly transactions and active addresses, with its share of the total and its change against last month.

Cites: Monthly transactions per layer 2; Monthly active addresses per layer 2; Share of layer 2 transactions.

### Fees and what each paid Ethereum

User fees collected and costs paid to Ethereum per layer 2, and the on-chain margin between them.

Cites: User fees per layer 2; Ethereum costs per layer 2; On-chain margin per layer 2.

### Value secured

Month-end value on each layer 2, split into canonically bridged, externally bridged and natively minted assets.

Cites: Month-end value secured per layer 2; Change in value secured.

### Biggest movers

The layer 2s whose rank or share changed the most, with the transactions and contracts that drove each change.

Cites: Rank changes by measure.

### How this edition was measured

The month's block ranges on every chain, the chains added or dropped and any correction to earlier editions.

## How it will be measured

- Monthly transactions and active addresses are counted from each layer 2's blocks between the month's first and last block, with system transactions left out; an address counts once a month.
- User fees and Ethereum costs are summed over the same blocks, from layer 2 receipts and from each rollup's batch and proof transactions on Ethereum.
- Value secured is read at the month's last block on Ethereum and on each layer 2, from canonical bridge balances and natively minted supply, valued with Chainlink feeds.
- Rank changes compare each measure with the previous month's edition computed the same way; a chain added mid-month is ranked from its first full month.

## Data it needs

- `l2_activity_daily` (to build): Per layer 2 per day: transactions, active addresses, fees users paid on the L2, and what the L2 paid Ethereum to settle and post data.
- `bridge_flows_daily` (to build): Deposits into and withdrawals out of canonical and major third-party bridges by chain, token and day, plus escrow balances at day end.
- `token_supply_daily` (to build): Total supply of each registry token on each chain at day end: wrapped BTC, liquid staking tokens, tokenized assets and other tracked tokens.
- `native_prices_daily` (to build): Reference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time.
- Source: Monthly transactions and distinct senders per layer 2 from its blocks
- Source: Monthly user fees from layer 2 receipts and Ethereum costs from each rollup's batch and proof transactions
- Source: Month-end balances of canonical bridge contracts on Ethereum for ETH and major tokens
- Source: totalSupply() of natively minted tokens on each layer 2 at month end
- Source: Chainlink feeds at month-end blocks

## Questions

### Which is the biggest Ethereum layer 2?

It depends on the measure. The report ranks each layer 2 on transactions, active addresses, fees, costs paid to Ethereum and value secured, because a chain that leads on one often trails on another.

### Why rank layer 2s by month?

A month smooths out one-day spikes, such as airdrop claims or mints, while still showing trends. Each edition closes at the month's last block, so its figures do not move after publication.

### How are active addresses counted?

An address is active in a month when it sends at least one transaction on that layer 2. It is counted once however many transactions it sends, and system transactions are left out.

### Why did a chain's rank change?

The movers section names the contracts and activity behind each large change, such as one app's transactions or a large deposit into the bridge, so a change can be traced rather than guessed.

## Glossary

- **Active address**: An address that sent at least one transaction on a chain during the period.
- **Value secured**: Assets on a layer 2 from its canonical bridge, from other bridges or minted natively, at the period's last block.
