**Question:** What is the WETH, WBTC or cbBTC contract address on each chain, and who issues or backs each one?

- Kind: Table in Voltfin Strata
- Topic: [Layer 2s](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/layer-2)
- Chains: Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, HyperEVM, Monad, Plasma, Berachain, Sonic, Unichain, Linea, Scroll, ZKsync, Mantle, Blast, Celo, Gnosis, World Chain, Ink, Katana
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

Wrapped tokens let ETH and bitcoin move as ERC-20s, and developers look up their contracts constantly: WETH to route a swap, WBTC or cbBTC to list as collateral. Many chains carry several tokens with similar names, some issued by custodians and some by bridges, and only one is the address an app means. This table lists each of them on every covered chain.

Each row names the token's issuer or bridge, how it is made and what backs it: WETH wraps ETH one for one in a contract and custodial BTC tokens are minted against bitcoin a firm holds, while bridged copies depend on a bridge. It shows decimals, which differ between wrappers, and the token's supply on the chain today, read from the contract.

## Blueprint

One row: One row per wrapped BTC or ETH token contract per chain, on the latest complete day

- **Token** (`token`): The token's name and symbol as its contract reports them.
- **Wraps** (`wraps`): BTC or ETH: the asset the token represents.
- **Chain** (`chain`): The chain this contract lives on.
- **Contract** (`contract`): The token contract address, from the registry and confirmed on-chain.
- **Issuer or bridge** (`issuer`): The custodian, protocol or bridge that issues the token on this chain.
- **Type** (`token_type`): Wrapper contract, custodial issue, bridged copy or cross-chain standard.
- **Canonical** (`canonical`): Whether the chain's documentation names this contract as the canonical version.
- **Decimals** (`decimals`): The decimals the contract reports.
- **Supply** (`supply`, tokens): totalSupply() at the latest day-end block, scaled by decimals.
- **Receipt** (`receipt`): The reads behind the row and the block they were made at.

## How it will be measured

- Each contract comes from the token registry, built from issuer and chain documentation, and is confirmed on-chain by its name(), symbol() and decimals().
- Type is wrapper contract, custodial issue, bridged copy or cross-chain standard, with the bridge or standard named; a wrapper contract's backing is its own ETH balance.
- Supply is totalSupply() at the latest day-end block on each chain, kept per chain so that bridged copies are never added to the original.
- Where a BTC token's reserves are published as Bitcoin addresses, the reserve balance is shown beside the token's total supply across chains in the row's receipt.

## Data it needs

- `token_supply_daily` (to build): Total supply of each registry token on each chain at day end: wrapped BTC, liquid staking tokens, tokenized assets and other tracked tokens.
- `bridge_flows_daily` (to build): Deposits into and withdrawals out of canonical and major third-party bridges by chain, token and day, plus escrow balances at day end.
- `address_labels` (to build): Labels for known addresses: exchanges, bridges, protocols, funds, treasuries, sanctioned addresses and known attackers.
- Source: The token registry: issuer, type and the canonical contract on each chain
- Source: name(), symbol() and decimals() read from each contract
- Source: totalSupply() at day-end blocks on each chain
- Source: The ETH balance of each WETH contract and published BTC reserve addresses

## Questions

### What is WETH?

Wrapped ether: an ERC-20 token that holds ETH one for one. Contracts that expect ERC-20 tokens can handle WETH, and anyone can wrap or unwrap at any time through the WETH contract. On chains whose gas token is not ETH, the token called WETH is usually a bridged copy instead.

### Why are there several WETH tokens on one chain?

Bridges and apps sometimes deploy their own wrapped ETH, and older bridged versions stay in circulation after a chain adopts a canonical one. The table marks the canonical contract that the chain's documentation names and lists the others with their issuers.

### Why do wrapped BTC tokens use different decimals?

Each issuer chooses. WBTC and cbBTC use eight decimals, matching bitcoin's smallest unit, while tBTC and some others use eighteen like most ERC-20 tokens. An app that assumes one scale for every BTC token will misprice the others.

### Is the address the same on every chain?

Sometimes. Some issuers deploy at the same address on several chains, but many do not, and a lookalike token can sit at an address that looks right on another chain. Always match the address to the chain, which is what each row does.

### How can I check a wrapped token's backing?

For WETH, the contract's ETH balance should equal its supply. For custodial BTC tokens, compare the issuer's published reserve addresses on Bitcoin with the token's total supply across chains. The wrapped bitcoin supply page tracks those checks over time.

## Glossary

- **Wrapped token**: A token that represents another asset one for one, held in a contract or by a custodian, so it can be used where the original cannot.
- **Canonical token**: The version of a token that a chain or issuer names as official, usually minted by its native bridge or by the issuer.
- **Custodial issue**: A token minted by a firm against assets it holds in custody, redeemable through that firm.
