**Question:** How much XRP is in Ripple's escrow, and how much was released this month?

- Kind: Dashboard in Voltfin Vantage
- Topic: [Layer 1 chains](https://voltfincrypto.com/topics/chains)
- Chains: XRP Ledger
- Status: Planned. The data is not published yet, so this page states no figure; each figure will open its receipt when it is.

In 2017 Ripple locked a large part of its XRP in a series of escrows on the XRP Ledger, set so that a fixed amount becomes releasable at the start of each month. Ripple finishes that month's escrow to take the XRP, and usually places what it does not need into a new escrow at the end of the schedule. This dashboard reads every escrow those accounts own and every escrow transaction, to show what is locked, what was released and what was locked again.

Use it to see the escrowed balance at any month end, how much of each monthly release stayed out of escrow and when the next escrows become releasable. Every figure comes from escrow ledger objects and transactions in validated ledgers, so it can be checked against the ledger itself.

## Blueprint

### Escrow

XRP in escrow now, this month's release and what was locked again.

- **XRP in escrow** (XRP): The total Amount of every escrow owned by Ripple's escrow accounts at the latest validated ledger.
- **Released this month** (XRP): XRP released this month by EscrowFinish transactions from Ripple's escrows.
- **Locked again this month** (XRP): XRP placed in new escrows by the same accounts this month.
- **Share of XRP in escrow** (%): XRP in escrow as a share of all XRP in existence, read from the same validated ledger.
- **Released, locked again and kept by month** (XRP): For each month, the XRP released, the part locked again and the part Ripple kept, from the month's escrow transactions.

### Schedule

Every remaining escrow and the history of monthly releases.

- **Next escrow releasable**: The FinishAfter time of the next escrow that can be finished, with its amount.
- **Escrows remaining** (count): Escrow objects still owned by Ripple's escrow accounts at the latest validated ledger.
- **XRP in escrow over time** (XRP): The escrowed total at each month end since the program began, which falls by what Ripple keeps.
- **Remaining escrow schedule**: Every remaining escrow with its amount and FinishAfter date, in the order they become releasable.

Filters: Period (Last 12 months, last 3 years or since 2017).

## How it will be measured

- Escrowed XRP is the sum of the Amount of every escrow object owned by Ripple's escrow accounts, from account_objects of type escrow at the last validated ledger of each day and month.
- Each monthly release is the EscrowFinish of the escrow whose FinishAfter time has passed; re-escrowed XRP is the EscrowCreate amounts the same accounts send in the same month.
- Kept XRP is the month's released amount minus the amount locked again, so the dashboard shows what left the escrow program for good.
- The schedule lists every remaining escrow with its FinishAfter date and amount, read from the same objects.
- Each figure carries a receipt: the validated ledger index and hash, and the transactions behind each release.

## Data it needs

- `token_unlocks` (to build): Vesting and unlock schedules of major tokens, from vesting contracts where they exist and from published schedules otherwise, with each unlock's date and recipient group.
- `market_caps_daily` (to build): Market capitalization of major assets as circulating supply times a reference price, and each asset's share of the total, per day.
- Source: account_objects of type escrow for Ripple's escrow-owning accounts at validated ledgers: Amount and FinishAfter per object
- Source: EscrowCreate, EscrowFinish and EscrowCancel transactions sent by those accounts
- Source: The total_coins field of each validated ledger, for the share of all XRP in escrow

## Questions

### How much XRP is in escrow?

The dashboard sums every escrow owned by Ripple's escrow accounts at the latest validated ledger and at each month end. The total falls by what Ripple keeps from each monthly release and does not change for what it locks again.

### How does the monthly escrow release work?

Each escrow has a FinishAfter time, after which it can be finished. Ripple's escrows were set so that one becomes finishable at the start of each month. Ripple then finishes it to receive the XRP and can lock any part of it again in a new escrow.

### Does released XRP get sold?

Not necessarily. Released XRP moves to Ripple's own account, and much of it has usually been locked again. The dashboard follows the escrow transactions, not what Ripple later does with the XRP it keeps.

### Can Ripple release more than the schedule allows?

No. An escrow cannot be finished before its FinishAfter time, and the ledger enforces that rule for every escrow. Ripple can only take XRP from escrows whose time has come.

## Glossary

- **Escrow**: An XRP Ledger object that locks XRP until a set time or condition, after which it can be finished and paid out.
- **FinishAfter**: The time after which an escrow can be finished and its XRP delivered.
- **EscrowFinish**: The transaction that releases an escrow's XRP to its destination once its time has passed.
- **Re-escrow**: Locking XRP again in a new escrow after it was released, which moves it to the end of the schedule.
