About

What it answers, and for whom.

Base is the Ethereum layer 2 incubated by Coinbase, and much of its activity follows what Coinbase users and Base apps do in a given month: stablecoin payments, DEX trading, token launches and smart wallet use. This report records each month in one dated edition, with every figure read from Base and Ethereum and pinned to a block.

Each edition covers usage, what users paid in fees, what Base paid Ethereum to post its data, the margin between the two and where activity came from: the apps, contracts and tokens that grew or shrank. Base announced in 2026 that it would move from the OP Stack to its own codebase, and the report notes protocol changes in the month they take effect.

Method

How it will be measured.

Every figure will be read at a block, kept with its source and its exact read, and open a receipt anyone can re-check.

How receipts work →
  1. Activity counts transactions and the addresses that sent them in each UTC day of the month, from every Base block, with smart account operations counted once each.
  2. Fees users paid are the execution and data fees recorded in each transaction receipt, checked against the inflows to Base's fee vault contracts.
  3. What Base paid Ethereum is the gas and blob fees of the batch transactions its batcher sent to Ethereum, plus any state root or proof transactions, in the same month.
  4. App activity groups transactions by labelled contracts. Stablecoin supply is each token's supply at the month's last block, and DEX volume comes from decoded Swap events.

The data it needs

Read from chain state and history

  • l2_activity_dailyTo buildLayer 2 activity and costsPer layer 2 per day: transactions, active addresses, fees users paid on the L2, and what the L2 paid Ethereum to settle and post data.
  • blob_usage_dailyTo buildBlob usage and blob feesEIP-4844 blobs posted per day, blob gas used, blob base fee, and the rollup that posted them.
  • stablecoin_supply_dailyPublishedStablecoin supply by token and chainNative supply of each USD and EUR stablecoin on each covered chain at the chain's last block of each day, from totalSupply() reads, with bridged copies kept apart.
  • dex_swaps_dailyTo buildDEX volumeSwap counts and volume per DEX, pool and chain per day, decoded from Swap events, valued with stablecoin legs and oracle prices.
  • token_launches_dailyTo buildToken launchesNew tokens deployed per chain and launchpad per day, how many reached a DEX pool, and how many were abandoned.
  • address_labelsTo buildAddress labelsLabels for known addresses: exchanges, bridges, protocols, funds, treasuries, sanctioned addresses and known attackers.
  • Every Base block in the month: transactions, senders, gas used and receipt fees
  • Inflows to Base's fee vault contracts
  • Batch and blob transactions from Base's batcher to Ethereum, with their gas and blob fees
  • totalSupply() of stablecoins on Base at the month's last block
  • Swap events and launchpad factory events on Base
Questions

Questions people ask.

How does Base make money?

Users pay fees on Base for execution and for the cost of posting data to Ethereum. The sequencer, run by Coinbase, collects them, and the difference between what users pay and what Base pays Ethereum is its margin. The report measures both sides each month.

Does Base share revenue with Optimism?

Under a 2023 agreement, Base shared part of its sequencer revenue with the Optimism Collective. In 2026 Base said it would move off the OP Stack to its own codebase, and Optimism said the revenue share would not continue. The report records the payments it can see on-chain.

Why are fees on Base low?

Base posts its transaction data to Ethereum in blobs, which have a fee market of their own and usually cost far less than calldata. Its execution fee rises only when its blocks fill up. The report shows both parts of the fee and how each moved through the month.

How is this different from the Base chain stats dashboard?

The dashboard shows Base day by day, as it happens. This report is a dated monthly edition: it sums the month, compares it with the last and explains what changed, with every figure cited to the blocks it was read at.

Which apps drive Base activity?

It changes from month to month. Stablecoin transfers, DEX trading, token launchpads and social and creator apps have each led at different times. The report ranks contracts and apps by transactions, gas used and fees each month.

Sequencer
The operator that orders transactions on a layer 2 and produces its blocks; on Base it is run by Coinbase.
Batcher
The address that posts a layer 2's transaction data to Ethereum, usually in blobs.
Flashblocks
Partial blocks that Base streams every 200 milliseconds ahead of each full block, so apps can show a transaction's result sooner.
