DeFi TVL by Chain: Total Value Locked Rankings

How much value is locked in DeFi on each chain, and how has the ranking changed?

About

What it answers, and for whom.

Total value locked, or TVL, is the value of the assets deposited in DeFi protocols' contracts. This dashboard adds it up chain by chain at the start of each UTC day, from the balances those contracts hold, and ranks the chains. It shows where DeFi keeps its capital, how Ethereum's share compares with every other chain and how the order changes over time.

Each chain's total is the sum of its protocols with every asset counted once: when one protocol's receipt token is deposited in another, the underlying counts a single time. Assets are valued at on-chain oracle prices at the same block as the balances, so each change in a total splits into price moves and net deposits or withdrawals.

Use the ranking to compare chains on one definition, then open a chain to see which protocols and categories make up its total. Every figure lists the contracts it was read from, the block of the read and the price feed used.

Method

How it will be measured.

Every figure will be read at a block, kept with its source and its exact read, and open a receipt anyone can re-check.

How receipts work →
  1. Each protocol's value is read at the first block after 00:00 UTC on each chain: ERC-20 balanceOf and native balances of its registered contracts, plus state calls where balances miss positions, such as Aave aToken supply, Morpho Blue market totals or Lido getTotalPooledEther.
  2. Assets are valued with Chainlink latestRoundData at the same block; an asset without a feed is valued from a deep stablecoin pool, or listed as unpriced and left out of the total.
  3. Receipt tokens held by another protocol are flagged, so a chain's total counts the underlying once even when liquid staking tokens sit in a lending market or LP tokens in a vault.
  4. Borrowed assets and a protocol's own token staked in its contracts stay out of the headline total and are shown as separate lines.
  5. Ethereum's share is its total divided by the total of every covered chain on the same day; a chain not yet covered is named as missing, never counted as zero.

Read from chain state and history

  • defi_tvl_dailyTo buildDeFi value lockedAssets deposited in DeFi protocols per protocol, chain and asset at day end, valued with oracle prices, never double counting receipt tokens.
  • native_prices_dailyTo buildOracle prices by dayReference prices of major assets read from on-chain oracle feeds (Chainlink latestRoundData) at each day's last block, with each round's update time.
  • ERC-20 balanceOf and eth_getBalance of registered protocol contracts at the first block after 00:00 UTC on each chain
  • Protocol state calls where balances miss positions: Aave aToken totalSupply, Morpho Blue market totals, Lido getTotalPooledEther

  • Chainlink latestRoundData price feeds at the same daily blocks
Questions

Questions people ask.

What is TVL in DeFi?

Total value locked is the market value of assets deposited in DeFi protocols' contracts: collateral in lending markets, liquidity in DEX pools and deposits in vaults and staking contracts. It measures capital committed to protocols, not their trading activity or revenue.

Which chain has the most DeFi TVL?

Ethereum has held the largest DeFi total for most of DeFi's history. The ranking above is recomputed every day from contract balances, so it shows the current order of every covered chain, each total with its receipt.

Why does TVL fall when prices fall?

TVL is measured in dollars, so a drop in the price of ETH or other deposited assets lowers it even if no one withdraws. The history page splits each change into a price effect and a flow effect, which separates a market move from capital leaving.

Why do TVL figures differ between sources?

Sources disagree on what to include: borrowed assets, liquid staking, a protocol's own token and receipt tokens deposited twice. This dashboard states each rule in its method and counts every asset once.

Are layer 2s counted separately from Ethereum?

Yes. Base, Arbitrum and other layer 2s are ranked as chains of their own, so capital that moves from Ethereum mainnet to a layer 2 lowers Ethereum's share and raises the layer 2's total.

Total value locked (TVL)
The value of assets deposited in a protocol's contracts at a point in time, priced in USD.
Receipt token
A token a protocol issues for a deposit, such as an aToken, an LP token or a liquid staking token. Counting it beside the deposit behind it would count the same assets twice.
Price effect
The part of a change in TVL caused by prices moving while the balances held stay the same.
